...Sad to See August Go...

August has been getting shortchanged in the past few years. When I
was growing up, August was an important transition month. There was
no going back to school until after Labor Day, which was wonderful.
There was the swimming pool every day. No pressure to be inside to
watch a television show…they were all reruns. There was sleeping late
and playing outside until dark. Football was still a few weeks off,
which left more room for the perfect summer sport: baseball. August
was a great, last transition month. Now school starts back early in
the month and the beaches are empty. August has been ruined.

SHOWERS/STORMS FOR SUNDAY: A weak frontal boundary settled down into
Central Alabama on Saturday. Don't bother looking for it. It's hard
to find. It will remain just to our south today, perhaps moving a bit
to the north as a couple of surface lows ripple along the boundary.
This should give pretty good rain chances to areas along and south of
I-20. There will be a very sharp north to south rainfall gradient
today, with little if any rain over northern sections, to over an inch
over South Central Alabama. The rainfall should begin to diminish
this evening

MONDAY AND BEYOND: The rainfall should be all gone by Monday
morning. Skies should clear toward morning, giving way to partly
cloudy skies during the day. Highs will be in the lower to middle 80s
after an early morning start in the middle 60s. Looks for some
comfortable morning readings Tuesday and Wednesday, with lower 60s
common. A few spots could reach the 50s. Temperature
and humidity levels will be increasing as we head through the week.

TROPICS: A dissturbance over the Central Atlantic seems to be ready
to develop. It is over warm water, in a low shear environment and has
and upper level high over it. It could become a tropical depression
soon. Should stay north of the Caribbean.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: Tom Skilling will be on the show this
week. We will tape Tuesday morning to accommodate his schedule. We
talk National Weather Service on Labor Day night. Catch up on past
shows at www.WeatherBrains.com, or subscribe on iTunes. Get
information about the show on Twitter @WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The Jacob Creek Fatal Flood on the Kansas
Turnpike. Four children and their mother were killed when their
minivan was washed from the Kansas Turnpike near Emporia as torrential
rains flooded a section of the highway that had never flooded in its
history. A man in another car that was also washed from the highway
by the floodwaters was also found dead. About 9 p.m. on t his
Saturday night, heavy rain swept several motorists off I-35 south of
Emporia, Kansas at Jacob Creek. The heavy rain caused the creek to
overwhelm the culvert that normally carried water under the highway.
Several concrete barricades weighing 10,000-12,000 pounds and seven
vehicles were swept away. The culvert was under designed to handle
the water. The barricades held the water in place, forming a huge
lake, until the carriers gave way and the cars were swept downstream.
