...Cooler Air On The Way Again...

The sound of a gentle rain on this Sunday morning is symbolic of the
passing of the seasons. As we head from August to September over the
next couple of days, to the casual observer it appears we are just
flipping pages on the calendar. But to weather humans, it is the
passing of a meteorological season. By Tuesday, we will be entering
meteorological autumn, although until September 21st, astronomically
we will still be in summer.

GENERAL RAINS: An upper level disturbance passed across the area
this morning, triggering an area of rain and storms that moved into
Georgia. Some heavy rain fell over East Alabama at midmorning. A
second upper level disturbance is passing across Alabama early this
afternoon. It is producing a large area of rain over North Central
Alabama with storms over South Central and South Alabama. Areal
flood advisories were required for Marengo County, where over two
inches of rain had fallen.

REST OF THE WEEK: The disturbance will continue northeastward today
and open the door for a cool front to push through the area. Drier
air will begin to filter into the area overnight, giving us a partly
cloudy and less humid day on Monday. We have been calling for dry
conditions for much of the week ahead, but there is a potential fly in
the ointment. The GFS model has been hinting at the development of a
bit of an easterly wedge, which would put us in a cool, moist low
level flow. This would mean clouds, a few showers and an easterly
breeze. If the models continue in this trend, we might have to put
showers in the forecast.

TROPICS: A tropical wave about 750 miles east of the Windward Islands
showed a burst of convection this morning, but that has since cycled
down a bit. Conditions still are favorable for this system to become
a tropical depression in the next day or so. The models predict it
will go north of the islands, but its low latitude could confound that
a bit. We will see.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: WB 188 will feature one of the most
anticipated guests in the show's history: Tom Skilling of WGN, Channel
9 in Chicago. Download and listen by noon Tuesday at www.weatherbrains.com
or on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Mighty Hurricane David grew into one of the
most intense storms ever to cross the Caribbean Sea. After wiping out
the tiny island of Dominica with 150 mph winds, David crashed ashore
in the Dominican Republic at peak intensity on August 30th, with wind
gusts over 200 mph. The central pressure in the storm was at its
lowest at 924 mb. More than 1,200 people on the two-nation island
were killed and over 80,000 were left homeless. Damage totaled more
than $1 billion in the Caribbean alone. Skipping through the Bahamas,
David struck a glancing blow on Florida, just north of the Gold Coast,
tore across Cape Canaveral and then chewed its way up the East Coast
on September 6th, downing trees and power lines well into New England.
