...Winter Storm Watch...

"I'll believe it when I see it." "It won't snow. It doesn't snow in
Alabama anymore." "They can't forecast winter weather in Alabama."
"Every time we get our hopes up, nothing happens." You hear the talk
on the street. A couple of times this winter, we have seen promising
snow situations evaporate. So we are cautious when we start to
forecast snow here, but what the heck…here we go…

ACCUMULATING SNOW POSSIBLE: A dynamic upper level low is moving out
of southeastern Kansas into Arkansas early this afternoon. These
systems are accompanied by very cold air aloft. When combined with a
decent amount of moisture, they can be real snow producers. And that
is what we are expecting later today and tonight, starting in the
Missouri Bootheel and then moving into western Tennessee, Arkansas and
northern Mississippi. Widespread two inch amounts are expected in the
Memphis area into northern Mississippi, with some four inch
accumulations possible. A 50-100 mile wide band of accumulating snow
will set up somewhere in a northwest to southeast stripe across
northern Mississippi into Northwest and parts of Central Alabama. The
ground is warm, and accumulations will come first on grassy areas as
well as bridges. With a few hours of snow forecast, accumulation
could eventually build up on road surfaces. Within the stripe across
Alabama, there are increasing signs that there could be 1-4 inches of
snow accumulation, with the possibility of some even higher amounts.

SURROUNDING STATES: The National Weather Service in Memphis has
winter storm warnings posted for its warning area, including western
Tennessee, eastern Arkansas and northern Mississippi. The NWS in
Jackson maintains a Winter Weather Advisory for their North Central MS
counties, including places like Columbus, Starkville and Greenville.
The NWS Atlanta is being their traditionally conservative selves. The
same model we are relying on to forecast the snow across Alabama is
spitting out 2-4 inches of snow across Central Georgia from Atlanta
over to August. The mountains of Northeast Georgia will pick up
several inches. The midlands of South Carolina could also get some
heavy accumulations as a strong low forms off the coast and the upper
low tracks eastward tomorrow.

SUNDAY: We start off cloudy with a few continuing snow showers. A
strong north wind will transport in much colder air and make it feel
even colder. Highs may not get out of the 30s, despite returning
sunshine later in the day. With clear skies and diminishing winds,
lows Sunday night will drop into the upper 20s.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: Look for dry conditions for much of the week
ahead. A few showers could reappear on Friday with a passing system,
but amounts look light. Temperatures will start off below normal
early in the week, but will warm in the 70s by the end of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1918: An amazing warm-up of 83 degrees in just 12
hours at Granville, N.D. caused by a Chinook wind. The temperature
soared from an early morning low of -33F to an afternoon temperature
of 50F. Chinook winds are caused by the compression of Pacific air
descending the Rockies. Compressing the air causes it to heat up
resulting in the dramatic temperature rises.
