...Comfortable Daytime Temperatures...
A FEW SHOWERS BY WEDNESDAY: Based on what I learned in my sixth grade
science class, a high-pressure area is supposed to feature dry
weather. This afternoon, a lone north/south high-pressure system
extended all the way from New Orleans to Hudson Bay in Eastern Canada.
Net result: dry weather over a wide area. In fact, we could not find a
single bolt of lightning on lightning detection equipment in the
country. There were some showers over the Pacific Northwest and
California, some snow showers in the mountains of Utah and a few
showers north of the Ohio River.
This does not mean that Alabama will stay dry for a long time. By
Wednesday, with moderating temperatures, we will have a few showers
around the landscape. A slight chance of showers on Thursday and there
could even be a thunderstorm or so slip into the area. It looks like
our best chance of showers, including some thunderstorms, will come on
Friday as another cold front approaches from the north. That front
should push into South Alabama and probably stall late Friday and
Friday night. We do not expect any real cold weather behind this
front. We could go all the way through next weekend without dropping to
freezing at night.
LAST NIGHT: It was cold again with temperatures well below freezing
over the north half of the state. It dropped to 18 in Hamilton, 19 in
Valley Head, 20 in Scottsboro, 21 in Pinson and Cullman and 23 in
Jasper. We do not have all of our 33/40 watcher reports because of a
computer problem.
SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS: This is Severe Weather Preparedness Week
across Alabama presented by the National Weather Service, the EMA and
other agencies. Hope you saw the two-page advertisement in the Sunday
Birmingham News. The final episode of STORM ALERT 2009 presented by
the ABC 33/40 weather team will be at the Cullman Civic Center this
Thursday night. Doors open at 5:00, the program starts at 7:00 and you
are out of there by 8:15. Even in late February we can have tornadoes,
even though the prime season is March, April and May. On this date in
1975, a tornado touched down at Taylorville south of Tuscaloosa and
moved NE. It sheared off the second story of the Scottish Inn at
McFarland Boulevard and I-59. It went on to destroy 30 homes in Holt.
There was 1 fatality and 51 injuries in that storm.
ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD: Surprising how relatively mild it is in
Alaska. Less than ¼ of the weather stations had temperatures below
zero this morning.
Down in the lower 48, it was 20 below zero at six locations scattered
across the northern parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. A NE
storm is winding down after leaving 8 to 16 inches of snow at Caribou,
Maine with whiteout conditions. On Mt. Washington, New Hampshire, the
visibility was zero and blowing snow with their temperature 4 below
zero and wind gusts to 80 mph.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly spends much of the
time now on the move because we have two babies and our oldest
granddaughter living with us for several months. There is hardly
enough room for a ballgame in the living area any more. She even comes
in my office and curls up under my chair to get out of the noise.
However, she loves little babies and kids and is gentle with them as
can be. Life goes on, although a bit noisier.
