...Winter May Have a few Tricks Left...

Friday was a wild weather day across Central Alabama. Heavy rain,
thunderstorms, long lived supercells with rotation, gravity waves,
large hail, and flooding. All of that in a prolonged event. And by
tonight, it will seem like Mother Nature will have thrown everything
but the kitchen sink at us, including a few wintry tricks.

RAIN MOVING OUT: A surface low is moving out of Alabama into Georgia
this morning. As it does, it is clearing the way for a strong cold
front to move through the state. The main precipitation will end from
the west this morning after the front passes. It will be breezy with
a chilly west and then northwest wind. Temperatures across Central
Alabama will remain steady into early afternoon, then begin a slow
fall. There could be a few showers during the afternoon.

THE S WORD: It has been 3,318 days since we experienced a measurable
snow here in Birmingham. That streak could be in jeopardy tonight as
a big upper low barrels towards Alabama. Associated with very cold
air aloft, the system should have enough moisture to produce several
hours of light snow after 11 p.m. Despite the warm ground, snow could
begin to accumulate in some areas by morning. Some areas will receive
a dusting while some spots may see a couple of inches. A few spots
could get more.

SUNDAY: Look for a few leftover snow showers tomorrow morning, but
skies should clear rather quickly. Highs will be in the lower 40s
with a strong north wind. Sunday night will be clear and cold.
Temperatures will fall into the 20s overnight as winds relax.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Dry weather will prevail on Monday with below normal
temperatures in the 50s. Readings will gradually moderate as we head
through the week, with springlike 70s by Thursday and Friday. A
passing system will bring a chance of light showers on Friday.

VOODOO COUNTRY: It looks like we remain mostly dry until the 10th
when the first of several wet weather systems will will affect Alabama.

IN BIRMINGHAM THIS WEEKEND: A couple of important things happening
in the Magic City this weekend. Check out "Machines in Motion," an
exhibition of the machines of Leonardo da Vinci is at the McWane
Science Museum through April 27th. The Alabama Boys and Girls
Basketball Championships are going on at the Birmingham Jefferson
Convention Complex Arena. History buffs will love the special film
festival at the new Hewitt Trussville High School today and Sunday:
For a Better America, The new Deal on Film. It will feature twelve
documentary films from the 1930s presented by the National Archives.
Take some time to experience your great city and our wonderful state.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: 212.6 inches of rain fell on Reunion Island
between February 21-28 as Tropical Storm Gamede passed nearby. It
established a new world record for five days of rain.
