...Dangerously Cold Weather...

ALABAMA FEELS LIKE MONTANA: Well, that is an exaggeration, of course,
but we are experiencing some of our coldest temperatures in about six
years. It is a dangerous situation for Alabama where we are not
accustomed to temperatures this low or wind chill numbers that will
really bite you.

The big strong high-pressure area that we have been watching closely
for a week will push deeper into the central part of the country
tonight and by morning it should be centered over the west tip of
Kentucky. This will drive bitter cold air deeper into Alabama. A big
unanswered question at the moment is whether the wind will completely
drop off to calm by daybreak or remain out of the north at 5-10 mph.
We are going to opt for the latter and that will spell much lower wind
chill values. The wind chill could drop to near zero late tonight and
tomorrow morning, especially in areas north of Birmingham.

However, wind chill does not bother objects like radiators and water
pipes. The actual temperature determines how much of a problem for
those. We are going to maintain our estimated low of 12 degrees for
tonight and tomorrow morning as an average number across Central
Alabama. This includes the Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston corridor.
The low could easily be 3 or 4 degrees lower in some of the normally
cold valleys, even including the Pinson area.

It looks like high temperatures Friday will stay in the 20s across the
Tennessee Valley, but here in the Birmingham area they should edge
upward to about 34. A fairly good north wind again will make it feel a
lot colder.

Finally, some moderation on the old thermometer by Saturday afternoon
reaching the mid 40s, although early morning lows will still be in the
hard freeze category.

PRECIPITATION ON SUNDAY: Sure does not look like much, but we believe
some light rain will spread across the area and it could be mixed with
a bit of light snow before the temperature gets warm enough to be all
rain. We do not see any chance of accumulation, so this will be
another non-snow event.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The meteorologist at the National Weather Service in
Bismarck went outside and tossed a cup of coffee into the air with the
temperature around 44 below zero. It instantly looked like steam and I
am sure some of it froze by the time it touched the ground. The
coldest temperature in the good old USA this morning was 47 below just
NW of Garrison, North Dakota. It was 43 below at Turtle Lake, North
Dakota and a record low of 44 below at Bismarck. An amazing warm up in
Alaska where the coldest was a relatively mild 8 below at Northway. It
was only about a week ago that temperatures tanked out at 68 below
at Chicken, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We will be sure that Little Miss Molly
has her Christmas sweater on every time she goes out during this cold
snap. She looks so cute in that and I sense that she struts more
probably trying to show off. We were out again before sunrise. Even I
had to put on a light coat. This was another morning when she doubled
as the City of Trussville doggie inspector. Little dogs are strange.
About 3 months ago, the big black dog up the walking track with the
crooked tail (when he is going north, his tail points toward Anniston
and when he is going south, it points toward Albuquerque. Molly saw
him go to the bathroom on a small sprig of grass one morning. Now
every time she walks, she has to seek it out and go in the same place.
Life goes on.

HOPE

Hope. It's something we all look for. Too often we think hope
is just a wish or a feeling. We've seen what can happen when
we put our hope-our trust-in the wrong place, people or things.

Christian hope is different. It is the confident, joyful expectation
that God is working for my good and his glory.

Do you know someone who needs hope, especially in these tough times?

Join others seeking "Hope" this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org for service
times and directions.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover,
just 3 miles west of the Riverchase Galleria. Phone 205.985.7295.
