ABC 33/40 E-Forecast

ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Morning Edition For Wednesday January 14, 2009

HOPE

Hope. It's something we all look for. Too often we think hope
is just a wish or a feeling. We've seen what can happen when
we put our hope-our trust-in the wrong place, people or things.

Christian hope is different. It is the confident, joyful expectation
that God is working for my good and his glory.

Do you know someone who needs hope, especially in these tough times?

Join others seeking "Hope" this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org for service
times and directions.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover,
just 3 miles west of the Riverchase Galleria. Phone 205.985.7295.

...Arctic Blast Arrives Tomorrow...

BIG TIME COLD TOMORROW: Today will be rather uneventful with a sunny
sky and a high in the upper 40s, but the big story is the Arctic
express rolling in here tomorrow. We will have a hard time getting
above freezing tomorrow, and if you factor in strong northwest winds
gusting to 35 mph at times, that will drive the wind chill index down
to zero at times. Some communities north of Birmingham could very well
experience sub-zero wind chills during the day. There could be a few
scattered clouds around tomorrow, but the atmosphere will remain very
dry, and we have taken out the chance of flurries. The big deal is the
cold.

FRIDAY MORNING: The bottom will drop out late tomorrow night into
early Friday with a clear sky and diminishing wind. We are forecasting
a low of 12 degrees early Friday; if that verifies it will be our
coldest morning since January 24, 2003 when the temperature in
Birmingham dropped to 7 degrees. Of course, there will be huge spread
Friday morning due to the terrain across North-Central Alabama. We
figure most places will see a low somewhere between 10 and 15, but the
colder valleys will drop down into the 4 to 9 degree range. Ridge tops
in the inversion layer will see upper teens. But, everyone will
experience a damaging freeze.

Friday will remain very cold, but the won't be as raw thanks to a
sunny sky and light wind. Then, we will deal with one more very cold
morning early Saturday, with lows in the 11 to 16 degree range for
most spots. We should note here that there is a chance some of the
colder spots across North Alabama could remain below freezing for
almost 60 consecutive hours (from late tonight through late morning
Saturday). Birmingham should ease above freezing for at least one or
two hours tomorrow and Friday.

THE WEEKEND: We will see slowly moderating temperatures after Saturday
morning, with temperatures back in the low 40s Saturday afternoon. A
strong disturbance will bring some clouds, and even a chance of a few
sprinkles or flurries, by Sunday morning, but moisture levels will be
very limited and at this time significant precipitation is not
expected. The moderating trend will continue next week.

THINK ABOUT THE PETS: Once the cold air sets in tomorrow and Friday,
make sure to provide adequate shelter for pets also. Most dogs and
cats around here, even if they are large, are not prepared for this
kind of cold. Bring them indoors or into the basement if at all
possible starting tonight, even if you have to put them in a big box
in the kitchen. If you absolutely have to leave the pets outside: 1.
Make sure they have a continuously supply of unfrozen drinking water,
2. make sure their doghouse door faces south, 3. add a curtain or
something over the door (test it to be sure they'll go through it), 4.
put extra blankets, towels, etc. in their dog house, 5. put a sweater,
sweatshirt, or something on them if possible; Even if you just have to
cut holes in an old one of yours, it helps. However, bringing them in
is still the best alternative.
