ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Morning Edition For Friday January 16, 2009

HOPE

Hope. It's something we all look for. Too often we think hope
is just a wish or a feeling. We've seen what can happen when
we put our hope-our trust-in the wrong place, people or things.

Christian hope is different. It is the confident, joyful expectation
that God is working for my good and his glory.

Do you know someone who needs hope, especially in these tough times?

Join others seeking "Hope" this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org for service
times and directions.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover,
just 3 miles west of the Riverchase Galleria. Phone 205.985.7295.

...A Struggle To Get Above Freezing...

STILL IN THE DEEP FREEZE: Bitterly cold Arctic air will continue to
cover Alabama for the next 24 hours; despite a sunny sky today
temperatures will struggle to reach the mid 30s. Winds won't be as
strong as yesterday, but still wind chill index values in the teens
are likely much of the day. Then, tonight, we drop quickly with a
clear sky and light wind. By daybreak tomorrow, most places will wind
up in the 13 to 18 degree range, with some potential for single digit
lows again for the normally colder valleys and protected areas of
North Alabama.

So, you will need to maintain the standard cold weather precautions
tonight. Be sure and check on elderly people that might not have
adequate heat; bring in the pets, and keep exposed pipes wrapped and
protected so they won't be in danger of bursting. Be very careful if
you are using space heaters; if used improperly they pose the risk of
house fires. And, this is not a good time for outdoor burning due to
extremely dry air covering Alabama (dewpoints today could be as low as
-15).

THE WEEKEND: We finally warm up a bit tomorrow, with a high in the mid
40s with a partly to mostly sunny sky. Clouds will increase tomorrow
night in advance of a strong upper air disturbance within the deep
upper trough over the eastern U.S., and we will continue to mention
some risk of light rain or light snow during the day Sunday. The air
will be very dry, so precipitation should be light and spotty; the
best chance of any decent rain amounts will be down over the southern
quarter of the state.

Then, another surge of cold air drops into our state Sunday night; at
this time our weather looks dry and cold Monday and Tuesday with highs
in the 40s and lows in the 20s; the normally colder spots could reach
the teens both mornings. A decent moderating trend begins Wednesday,
which should last through the rest of the week as the Polar jet stream
retreats slowly to the north.

BRUTALLY COLD: Coldest place in the nation yesterday was Garrison,
North Dakota with 43 below zero. Other lows included -21 at
Minneapolis, -16 at Green Bay, and -10 at Chicago.

REMARKABLE WARM UP IN ALASKA: The coldest in our biggest state
yesterday morning was -8 at Northway. It was only a few days ago that
they were reporting -54. About a week ago, the thermometer strained
real hard and dropped down to an unbelievable at 68 below at Chicken,
Alaska. Another example of the change, over on the west side of the
state, the NWS in Juneau was issuing some flood warnings because of
heavy rain and melting snow. Stanley Creek had reached the fifth
highest level in history.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: The second severe arctic outbreak of the season
infiltrates the Central U.S. Zero degree temperatures were recorded
into Texas. The mercury dropped from 55 to -1 at Amarillo and from 62
to 10 at Oklahoma City.
