ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Morning Edition For Thursday January 15, 2009

HOPE

Hope. It's something we all look for. Too often we think hope
is just a wish or a feeling. We've seen what can happen when
we put our hope-our trust-in the wrong place, people or things.

Christian hope is different. It is the confident, joyful expectation
that God is working for my good and his glory.

Do you know someone who needs hope, especially in these tough times?

Join others seeking "Hope" this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org for service
times and directions.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover,
just 3 miles west of the Riverchase Galleria. Phone 205.985.7295.

...Coldest Air In Six Years...

A COLD WAVE: Bitter cold Arctic air will stream into Alabama on brisk
north winds gusting as high as 30 mph. Despite a mostly sunny sky, we
are forecasting a high only in the mid 30s today, with wind chill
index values in the 0 to 10 degree range much of the day. The biting
wind will die down tonight, allowing temperatures to drop to levels
not seen here in six years. We continue to forecast lows between 10
and 15 degrees for most places at daybreak tomorrow, but keep in mind
the colder valleys across North and Central Alabama will wind up in 4
to 9 degree range. Up in the inversion layer above 1,500 feet, lows in
the upper teens are expected. We are forecasting an average low of 12
degrees tomorrow morning; if we reach that it will be the coldest
morning since January 24, 2003 when the temperature dropped to 7
degrees at the Birmingham Airport.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: While tomorrow won't be as raw as today
thanks to lighter winds, the day will still be cold. We will struggle
to reach the mid 30s, and another damaging freeze is likely by
daybreak Saturday. In fact, looks like Saturday morning could be just
as cold as tomorrow morning for much of Alabama, with lows down in the
10 to 15 degree range for many communities. We should warm into the
40s Saturday afternoon with a partly sunny sky.
A strong lobe of energy will be rotating through the base of the deep
upper trough over the eastern half of the nation Sunday; this feature
will bring some clouds, and maybe even a little light rain or light
snow to the state. The air will be very dry, and at this time a major
precipitation event is not expected. The best chance of seeing enough
snow to cover the ground Sunday should be actually east of Alabama,
through parts of Georgia and South Carolina, where the moisture will
be more plentiful.

FIRE DANGER: Seems like we always hear of tragic house fires in this
kind of cold weather. Be extremely careful with space heaters, and
also check on elderly people that might not have an adequate source of
heat.

PETS: Make sure to provide adequate shelter for pets in this cold.
Most dogs and cats around here, even if they are large, are not
prepared for this kind of cold. Bring them indoors or into the
basement if at all possible starting Wednesday night, even if you have
to put them in a big box in the kitchen. If you absolutely have to
leave the pets outside: 1. Make sure they have a supply of unfrozen
drinking water (check it every 12 hours), 2. make sure their doghouse
door faces south, 3. add a curtain or something over the door (test it
to be sure they'll go through it), 4. put extra blankets, towels, hay,
etc. in their dog house, 5. put a sweater or sweatshirt on them if
possible; even if you just have to cut holes in an old one of yours,
it helps. However, bringing them in is still the best alternative.
