...Thermometer Headed South...

COLDEST IN SIX YEARS: It may be a blessing in disguise that we do not
have a snow cover as this very cold arctic air pours into the state.
If we did have a blanket of snow and winds were light, temperatures
could easily be 5 to 10 degrees colder than what we are expecting.
Even without snow, we are still calling for a low of 10-12 early
Friday morning. Further north in the state, there could easily be some
lows around 8 to 10. Generally across the extreme north, the lows
should be 5 to 10. If the wind goes completely calm, somebody may take
a shot at zero.

It is imperative that all precautions be taken to protect from a hard
freeze. There have been a lot of suggestions on the 33/40 Blog of
things to do. This includes the protection of pets.

At midafternoon today, the leading edge of the fresh batch of arctic
air was pushing into North Arkansas. The front will be moving through
Central Alabama at some point this evening. Temperatures had reached
the low 50s over most of Alabama this afternoon, but as nearby as
Central Missouri temperatures were in the teens with a brisk north
wind. The southward movement of the front has slowed a bit, but it
should still move through all of Alabama before daybreak.

THE OLE WIND CHILL: Years ago there was no such thing as a wind chill
index, but now we have that to deal with too. In olden times, common
sense would
tell you that if it was going to be a windy day, the cold temperatures
would feel a lot colder. Across the northern part of Alabama tomorrow,
the wind chill may dip to zero or slightly lower and it should drop
below 10 at times even down into Central Alabama.

Fortunately the 15-25 mph wind we are expecting tomorrow will diminish
quite a bit on Friday. Our coldest temperature will be Friday morning
with an average low across Central Alabama about 12. It will be almost
that cold Saturday morning, however the thermometer will recover some
into the mid 40s Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday.

PRECIPITATION: Some of our weather models shift the wind around to SW
by Saturday afternoon bringing in a little moisture from the Gulf of
Mexico by Sunday. This could set off a little bit of scattered light
rain Sunday. There could even be a few periods of light snow mixed in.
The air is so dry that there should not be accumulation.

GLOBAL ROAMING: In the war zone, high temperatures in Baghdad should
be in the low 60s for the next several days. High of 92 tomorrow in
Sydney and 77 in Cozumel. It has been estimated that the winter
relative humidity in American homes averages 13%, which is twice as
dry as the Sahara Desert. Wind chill colder than minus 50 over the
extreme northern USA today. A wind chill of minus 70 will freeze
exposed human flesh in only 30 seconds.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the second morning in a row, Little
Miss Molly had me out walking before sunrise. I never know what to
expect. Since those are the only trips she gets to take, I try to let
her be the boss. Yesterday she was pulling so hard on the leash that
her rear paws were digging like a mule trying to pull a plow or heavy
wagon she was in such a hurry. This morning it was just the opposite.
We stopped at least 30 times for her to sniff and inspect and reverse
directions. Even though it was still before sunrise, she excited some
community dogs by going by and our old friend, the Old Crow, was
cawing the whole time. We got home. She had a Milkbone. I had more
coffee and she headed to my favorite chair for a nap. Life goes on.

HOPE

Hope. It's something we all look for. Too often we think hope
is just a wish or a feeling. We've seen what can happen when
we put our hope-our trust-in the wrong place, people or things.

Christian hope is different. It is the confident, joyful expectation
that God is working for my good and his glory.

Do you know someone who needs hope, especially in these tough times?

Join others seeking "Hope" this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org for service
times and directions.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover,
just 3 miles west of the Riverchase Galleria. Phone 205.985.7295.
