...Some Bitter Cold Weather...

POLAR BEAR WEATHER: Before this is all over with a wild imagination,
we might think we could look out and see a polar bear roaming the
Alabama landscape. Not so, of course, but we are in for a very cold
two to three day period. Before we discuss temperatures, let us
address the snow situation. We cannot say absolutely there will not be
a few flakes Thursday as the bitter cold pours in, but we left them
completely out of the forecast, because the atmosphere will be so
ultra dry. Beyond that, the only possible chance of some snow would be
on Sunday. Models indicate some light precipitation, but it would
probably be mostly light rain.

By far the most important concern is the bitter cold. Alabama
residents are simply not accustomed to temperatures this low. It is
imperative that we take all precautions against a damaging type freeze
both Friday morning and Saturday morning. The much colder air will
start pouring in on Thursday with NW wind as high as 30 mph. With
highs near freezing, the wind chill will extremely low. We have
projected our coldest temperature for the entire event to come on
Friday morning with an average low across Central Alabama around 10.
The air is going to be exceedingly dry, so some of the valley
locations could be closer to 5. In fact, in some of the traditional
cold spots in the NE Alabama valleys, we could possibly hear of a low
closer to zero. The one possible saving grace for Friday morning is
that the wind will not go completely calm before daybreak. There are
some indications we may still have a north wind of 5 to 10 at that
time. If that happens, it will keep our temperature up a bit, but it
will also feel colder because of the wind chill.

After a high near freezing on Friday, we look for a low of around 15
on Saturday morning. Afternoon temperatures Saturday should recover
well into the 40s and by Sunday afternoon we should be in the upper 40s.

GLOBAL ROAMING: There is a vast ocean of bitter cold arctic air
covering the northern USA, virtually all of Canada, Alaska, the Arctic
Ocean and over the North Pole and deep down into the other side of the
globe. We have seen temperatures as low as 69 below zero in Eastern
Siberia and 67 below on the ice cap in Greenland. All across extreme
Northern Canada, temperatures are close to 45 below. Fairly unusual in
Minnesota this morning as every single weather station in the state
reported subzero temperatures. Most of the state was well below zero.
Embarrass, in the NE part of that state, was the first prize winner
for the coldest in the lower 48 with a bitter 43 below zero.
Contrasting sharply to that was a high of 90 yesterday at Santa Ana,
California. In Alaska this morning, the coldest was 45 below at Ft.
Yukon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure am glad that Little Miss Molly has
a nice warm sweater. I am sure it will default to me to go on her
early morning walk, which is sometimes before daybreak. If it is 10
degrees, with even an 8 mph wind, I will have to put on a coat and a
hat. She does not like it extremely cold, so she will probably
complete her bathroom assignments in no time flat. That will suit me
fine as fresh coffee and milkbones will be awaiting us. Life goes on.

HOPE

Hope. It's something we all look for. Too often we think hope
is just a wish or a feeling. We've seen what can happen when
we put our hope-our trust-in the wrong place, people or things.

Christian hope is different. It is the confident, joyful expectation
that God is working for my good and his glory.

Do you know someone who needs hope, especially in these tough times?

Join others seeking "Hope" this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist
Church in Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org for service
times and directions.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover,
just 3 miles west of the Riverchase Galleria. Phone 205.985.7295.
