...Warmer Afternoons Ahead...
A FEW DRY DAYS: Dry air now covers much of Alabama, and accordingly
our weather looks pretty much rain-free through Saturday, with warmer
afternoons but pleasant nights. With a good supply of sunshine, we
will climb to near the 90 degree mark, which is about where we should
be in mid-August in Alabama. Look for very similar weather tomorrow
and Saturday as the deeper moisture remains to the west of our state.
We will introduce the chance of widely scattered afternoon showers and
storms by Sunday and Monday, but again the most numerous showers and
storms will most likely stay focused to the west across Mississippi,
Louisiana, and Arkansas.
WAITING AND WATCHING: We continue to watch with interest a tropical
wave just northeast of the Leeward Islands. While this has been slow
to develop, we still believe it has an excellent chance to become a
tropical storm, and perhaps a hurricane during the next five days as
it continues to move to the west/northwest. Most of the computer
models have the system just off the Florida East Coast early next
week; the system now looks like it will turn northward before having a
chance to get into the Gulf of Mexico, meaning the primary threat will
be to the southern Atlantic coast of the U.S. Of course, this is not
carved in stone and is subject to change. Everyone from Key West north
to Cape Hatteras will need to keep a close eye on this one; there
could be some rapid intensification involved in the days ahead with
warm water and only limited shear in the path of this one. I expect
there could be some nervous moments for our friends in Miami and Fort
Lauderdale early next week.
Another tropical wave trails this one, farther out in the Atlantic; at
this time it looks like this one will recurve into the open Atlantic
without being a threat to any major landmass. Again, you know the
qualifier here, this is subject to change.
DOWNHILL SIDE OF SUMMER: We are now past the typical peak of the
summer heat in Alabama. Our average high is 91, and the average low is
70 from July 13 to August 10. Our average low has dropped to 69, and
the average high will drop to 90 on August 16.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES: The official high in Birmingham
yesterday was 82 degrees, 21 degrees cooler than the high on August
13, 2007, 103. We were in the midst of a
serious heat wave a year ago; Birmingham established new record highs
on 8 days in a row, and the heat peaked on August 15 and August 23
when the high was a sweltering 105 degrees.
ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Some of the wettest places in the nation
yesterday: Tallahassee with 2.20"; New Orleans with 2.16", and
Columbia, SC with 1.88". Hottest spot was Death Valley,
CA with 121 degrees; coldest was Shirley Basin, Wyoming with a frosty
30 degrees. Hailstones three and a half inches in diameter were
reported Edgerton, Minnesota yesterday afternoon. A tornado touched
down near the community of Calhan, Colorado.
