...Drier Air Moves Into Alabama...

A BRIGHTER DAY: That was a very remarkable August rain event
yesterday. For a large part of Alabama, it was a long, soaking, all
day rain. The heaviest rain was along and west of I-65, where some
spots saw rain totals over two inches. Some totals included 2.21" at
Montgomery, 1.75" at Northport, 1.72" at Coker (west of Tuscaloosa),
1.54" at Shelby Shores (Lay Lake), 1.53" at Demopolis, 1.51" at
Jemison, 1.32" at Odenville, 1.30 at the Tuscaloosa Airport, and 0.50"
at the Birmingham Airport. Amazingly enough, to the east, only a trace
of rain was reported at Anniston. Strong to severe thunderstorms
developed in the unstable air over the southwest part of Alabama, and
a few tornado warning were issued by the NWS in Mobile. No major
damage was reported from those storms.

Because of the clouds and rain, temperatures were almost 20 degrees
below average; at one point yesterday afternoon we had some Northeast
Alabama communities in the upper 60s with light rain falling; we could
normally be in the low 90s on an August afternoon.

THE DAYS AHEAD: The surface low responsible for yesterday's big rain
event is east of Alabama this morning, and drier air will be pulled
into North Alabama in the wake of that system. That means a clearing
sky this morning with sunshine returning, and a high back in the mid
80s. Looks like the dry air will stay in place tomorrow and Friday,
with afternoon temperatures peaking around 90 degrees. Over the
weekend a few scattered afternoon showers and storms will likely show
up, with highs holding in the 87 to 90 degree range.

TROPICAL ACTION: We continue to watch twin waves in the Atlantic. The
lead wave is about 400 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, and has the
potential to become a tropical depression today. An Air Force
Hurricane Hunter will investigate this one again today; the computer
models push this in the general direction of the Bahamas by early next
week. From there, the system could threat South Florida, perhaps as a
hurricane. The trailing wave remains rather disorganized, but there is
some chance it could become better organized today as well; that one
will either recurve into the open Atlantic, or perhaps pose a threat
to the east coast of the U.S. We will keep a wary eye on both of those
tropical waves in coming days.

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY: A record low of 55 degrees was set in Birmingham
thanks to cool and dry air that circulated into Alabama in the wake of
Tropical Storm Bonnie, which made landfall the day before near
Apalachicola, Florida with peak winds of only 45 mph. And, while we
were in cool, dry air, Hurricane Charley roared into Southwest Florida
on August 13, 2004 with 145 mph winds in the Punta Gorda area. Charley
weakened over land, but sustained winds were still in the 85 mph range
as it moved directly over Orlando. Ten deaths in the U.S. were
attributed to Charley, and property damage in our country was
estimated at 15 billion dollars, At the time, this figure made Charley
the second costliest hurricane in United States history, behind 1992's
Hurricane Andrew.
