...Watching the Tropics...
PLEASANT NIGHT TEMPERATURES: The afternoons are going to be heating
up a bit, but the nights will stay comfortable even into the first
part of next week with lows most nights in the mid 60s. It is subtle,
but it seems like there will be a slight resurgence of some dry air
from the north which will permit temperatures to be cool at night.
Some changes this afternoon as some showers developed over areas to
the west of Alabama and a few even moved into the western part of the
state. This is due to a minor upper-level disturbance, so we have
introduced some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms through
this evening, but most areas will probably stay dry. There is also a
slight risk on Saturday, but Sunday and Monday should be dry and
mostly sunny. The next widely scattered showers or storms will show up
about Tuesday. By that time, afternoon highs will be around 90 or
slightly above. We can take that because one year ago today it was 105
in Birmingham.
RAIN COMPARISON: We are still showing 0.78 surplus for Birmingham and
we have received 36.58 inches so far this year. A year ago today we
had only received 15.35 inches, so we have more than doubled last
year.
SHORTER DAYS: It is time for us to realize that less sunlight can
start having a minor effect on temperatures. As of today, we have lost
24 minutes of sunlight just in the first two weeks of August,
including 10 minutes in the morning and 14 in the afternoon.
EYES TOWARD THE TROPICS: You can bet most weather eyes will be
pointed east and SE over the next few days in anticipation of what
could become Tropical Storm or Hurricane Fay. We love those short
names. This afternoon the disturbance, which is still just a tropical
low-pressure area, was fighting some terrain problems as it was moving
westward over Puerto Rico. However, it has become better organized and
two hurricane hunters were crisscrossing it this afternoon. It will
likely move across the Dominican Republic, which has quite a few
mountains, so it is uncertain when it will be a named storm. The
projections are interesting. The so-called "spaghetti" plot of
hurricane models vary from curving it northward just east of the
Florida/Atlantic coast, while some of them project it up the Florida
Peninsula and one lone model brings it into the SE Gulf and moving
north off the west coast of Florida to the NE Gulf of Mexico. We
mention all of this, and surely you already know, that no one knows
for sure. Persons along the Atlantic Coast of the U.S. from Florida
northward to the Carolinas should watch this closely. It is unlikely
that it will get into the Gulf of Mexico, but even that is not sealed
in concrete. The National Hurricane Center will not post an official
track forecast until it becomes a named storm.
WEATHER NOTEBOOK: The temperature today has been running 105 below
zero at Vostok, Antarctica. I am the hottest natured guy north of the
equator, but not that much. Low temperatures this morning included 36
at Wainwright, Alaska and 35 at Wakefield, Michigan. Hottest yesterday
122 in Death Valley. How about that waterspout off the Rhode Island
coast?
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I wish I could get a
continuous readout on Little Miss Molly's blood pressure. We all had a
mixed up morning and especially the little girl. Running errands plus
a two-hour visit by the heat pump people giving us a semi-annual check
up. About the same time, the people who treat our front and backyard
came by. Grandkids were coming in and out. That poor little girl did
not get a single nap all morning. Also, no playtime, but she and I did
have an early morning quarter-mile walk, which she always treasures.
Life goes on and we wish her better luck tomorrow concerning ballgames
and walks. Life goes on and sometimes it is nerve racking for my
little 9-pound pal. She got a bit upset with me last night for keeping
her up so late.

CHURCH. IT'S NOT A BUILDING
It's people. A family of people who are far from perfect, who
don't pretend there are no disappointments in life. But who
know where to turn in those disappointments and where hope
is found.
This Sunday, some will gather at Hunter Street Baptist Church
in Hoover. Will you join us?
