...Just A Few Weekend Showers...

DRY WEATHER CONTINUES TODAY: A relatively dry airmass remains over
Alabama this morning, and we expect a good supply of sunshine with a
high not too far from the 90 degree mark. The humidity will remain
fairly low, and today's 90 certainly is more comfortable than the 105
degree high we saw one year ago today.

BRING ON THE WEEKEND: We will mention a chance of widely scattered
afternoon showers or storms tomorrow and Sunday, but most of the
weekend should be dry with highs generally in the 87 to 90 degree
range. We will roll with a similar forecast into the first few days of
next week.

FINDING FAY: A developing tropical storm is passing just north of
Puerto Rico this morning as it moves to the west/northwest. Assuming
this stays north of Hispanolia, this should become Tropical Storm Fay
during the next 24 hours. In fact, environmental conditions suggest
this one should be a hurricane by the time it moves into the Southeast
Bahamas over the weekend. Most of the computer models turn Fay
northward, just off the Atlantic coast of Florida, by Sunday. But, it
could be close enough to the coast to bring lots of wind and rain from
Miami northward to Daytona Beach. Steering currents collapse next
week, making this a difficult forecast, but the entire Atlantic coast
of the U.S. will need to pay close attention to this one. The odds of
an entry into the Gulf of Mexico remain small at this time.

The second wave in the Atlantic, about 900 miles east of the Lesser
Antilles, remains disorganized, but it will need to watched in coming
days as conditions will become more favorable for development.

ON THIS DATE IN 1995: Residents of the Southeast U.S. held their
breath as Tropical Storm Beryl made landfall on the Florida coast near
Panama City. The area had experienced some of its worst flooding ever
a month earlier as a result of Tropical Storm Alberto. Fortunately,
the storm was moving much more quickly than Alberto, so no major
flooding from rainfall occurred. Some coastal flooding was reported
from Apalachicola to Cedar Key. In addition, 23 tornadoes were caused
by the remnants of Beryl in South Carolina.

TALK ABOUT BAD LUCK: On this date in 1985, near Whitehall, New York,
lightning struck a farmhand. After he was revived, en-route to the
hospital, his ambulance was hit by lightning, resulting in a fire and
explosion which slightly injured the medics. The farmhand later died
at the hospital.

HODGEPODGE: Hottest weather in the nation remains over the Desert
Southwest; the hottest place was Death Valley, CA with 122 degrees.
The high in Las Vegas was 109. Many people in Alaska are calling this
the "year without a summer", but Fairbanks did warm up yesterday to 75
degrees. The high in Anchorage was only 60.
