...Afternoons Gradually Heating...
COMFORTABLE NIGHTS: We sure have not heard many complaints lately
about discomfort that can be blamed on the old thermometer. Even when
the thermometer pushes 90 in the afternoon, the dew point has been low
enough lately to where the heat is more bearable. This afternoon, for
example, temperatures were pushing 90 in parts of Central Alabama, but
the dew point was 64. It is not unusual this time of year when we push
90 for the dew point to be in the lower 70s. Translation: the sweat
glands work overtime.
We expect low temperatures in the mid 60s for the next couple of
nights and then in the upper 60s on through Monday. This morning we
even had a few upper 50s in some of the North Alabama cool spots and a
lot of low temperatures in the lower 60s.
We also want to flash back for a moment to our big rain event. Several
reports that came in late included 3.32 inches in Geneva, 3.40 in
Coaling and the most was 5.80 at Gallion. That little community is as
far in the SW corner of Hale County that you can get and it is about 5
miles ESE of Demopolis. We do not see any more big rain events in the
near future, but we have introduced widely scattered showers and
thunderstorms starting this weekend.
SEVERE WEATHER: SPC has a Slight Risk this afternoon and tonight from
about Amarillo and Oklahoma City north to places like Dodge City,
Colorado Springs, Denver and Cheyenne. Tomorrow the Slight Risk area
is for NW Texas from Lubbock and Amarillo into Eastern New Mexico. You
can still have some severe weather even if you are not in one of those
outlook areas. For example, early this afternoon a Tornado Warning was
issued for parts of the Miami metropolitan area.
WEATHER NOTEBOOK: A blistering 121 yesterday in Death Valley. That
desert outpost has cornered the market this year on being the hottest
in the country. It was 36 this morning at Lake Yellowstone in
Yellowstone National Park and also at Stanley, Idaho. Stanley has
cornered the market on low temperatures in the lower 48 most of this
year. In Alaska, the lowest was 35 at Barrow and Wainwright.
TROPICAL WEATHER: Our interest is growing because of the lead
tropical wave that was moving into the Virgin Islands. Two hurricane
hunters were in the area this afternoon to see if a tropical
depression had formed. It is interesting that the GFS (the Global
Forecast Model) projects it to eventually come through the Bahamas and
then curve northward staying east of Florida and Georgia, but coming
awfully close to the Outer Banks of North Carolina early next week.
Meanwhile, there is some indication that a separate low-pressure area
may develop over the NE Gulf. If that happens, we will need to upgrade
the mention of rain early next week.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I really feel for people who have lost
pets. The hurt goes on for a long time. This note from Carol Moore,
who lost two of her best friends, her dogs. Daisy was adopted from the
Humane Society. She was a Shih-tzu mix like Molly and she had reached
the ripe old age of 19 when Carol lost her 10 years ago. Her other
dog, Chico, a diabetic Chihuahua mix, was also a rescue from a
shelter. He was 17 when he died about 9 months ago. Carol says a day
does not go by when she aches for them. She mentioned that reading
about Little Miss Molly eases the pain somewhat. She also does not
want to think about having another pet just now. All this tells me
again that I should spend a lot of time with Molly.

CHURCH. IT'S NOT A BUILDING
It's people. A family of people who are far from perfect, who
don't pretend there are no disappointments in life. But who
know where to turn in those disappointments and where hope
is found.
This Sunday, some will gather at Hunter Street Baptist Church
in Hoover. Will you join us?
