...A State-wide Soaking (almost)...

SEVERAL DAYS TO DRY OUT: Well, we do not want to dry out too much,
but that is what will happen. We expect mostly sunshine Thursday and
Friday. Any showers and thunderstorms on Saturday will be very scarce
and only widely scattered ones on Sunday. We have a good thing going.
The rain yesterday increased the Birmingham excess for the year so far
to exactly 1 inch. Of course, not all communities are in the same
boat.

If you check the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog, you will see a record long
list of rain amounts from around the state. Yesterday was quite rare,
because we rarely have an all-day soaker in summer unless a tropical
depression, tropical storm or a hurricane is knocking at the door. I
really do not believe there was a square acre of dry topsoil in the
state by this morning. Extreme NE Alabama was mostly cheated and the
heaviest amounts were in the central and south. Here are just a few
samples of the biggest amounts:

2.45 Columbiana
2.00 Demopolis Skycam
2.40 Union Grove in Chilton County
3.91 Selma
2.21 Montgomery
1.81 Marion
2.35 Livingston

Most of the rain had ended by early this morning, except in the
extreme southeast where a new Tornado Watch had been posted for the
predawn hours. We do not have a confirmed report of a tornado
touchdown.

The dew point will be relatively low for the next couple of days and
that will allow our night-time temperatures to fall into the low and
mid 60s. Might even hear of a 58 in some of the valleys. With the
ground mostly soaked, there could be some shallow fog around daybreak
in low-lying areas.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The two systems in the Atlantic that we have been
watching are still there. However, the lead system weakened enough to
where the Hurricane Center cancelled a recon flight. The tropical wave
was located 200 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Upper level
conditions are expected to become more friendly for possible
development in a few days. It was moving WNW at 10-15. The other
disturbance was 700 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands and has
changed little today. It was moving slowly west and could possibly
develop a little in the next couple of days.

WEATHER NOTEBOOK: We hardly ever mention Hawaii, but in Honolulu only
0.05 rain this month bringing their total for the year to less than 3
inches. They would normally have over 10 inches by now. Still cool in
Alaska. Something that has prevailed most of the summer. Cool spots
this morning included 37 in Barrow and Wainwright, Alaska and 34 at
Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our daughter and her family have been
living with us slightly over one year. This includes 2 and sometimes 3
grandkids. Alex, our grandson, is as much of a goodwill ambassador as
Little Miss Molly. He often comes in the door followed by 3 or 4
neighborhood kids. (Very nice kids.) Molly thinks it is her
responsibility to greet every one of the kids individually and welcome
them to her house. This happens even if they go out for a little while
and come back in. It has been said, "If you can always be cheerful,
ignoring aches and pains, then you are probably the family dog. If you
can master tension without medical help, you are also the family dog."
Thanks to Bridget Tytler for those interesting tidbits. Life goes on
and I feel sure that Little Miss Molly is going to extend our lives at
least five extra years.

CHURCH. IT'S NOT A BUILDING

It's people. A family of people who are far from perfect, who
don't pretend there are no disappointments in life. But who
know where to turn in those disappointments and where hope
is found.

This Sunday, some will gather at Hunter Street Baptist Church
in Hoover. Will you join us?
