...Another Stormy Weekend...

This will make eight out of nine weekends that we have
had stormy weather in some format between Friday and Sunday here in
Central Alabama, by my calculations. This makes the seventh straight
one. Since I have the weekend shifts, it makes for interesting
weather, but also some sleepless nights. Tomorrow night may be one of
those sleepless nights.

SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING: The
gradual warming of spring is setting the stage for more and more
instability as we see highs in the 80s and increased moisture. That
combination today will put Alabama in a conditionally unstable
airmass. But fortunately, as we head toward summer, the dynamics for
severe storms become less prevalent and we end up with powerful
storms, but at least less tornadoes.

Unfortunately, all modes of severe weather will be
possible tomorrow night as an approaching trough will enhance any
storms that form and could produce rotating updrafts. The good news,
on one hand, is that the system will be coming in during the late
night. By that time, the atmosphere will have cooled some, and
instabilities will be at their lowest. On the other hand, the bad
news is that the storms will be coming through when people are
asleep. We think that the most critical time for severe weather will
come between 9:00 p.m. tonight and 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. You will
want to have that NOAA Weatheradio close at hand when you retire
tonight.

SUNDAY: We think that the storms will form into a squall
line overnight and push into Georgia by noon on Sunday. Skies should
clear fairly quickly during the day, setting the stage for a windy,
but decent Mothers' Day afternoon. Highs will be in the lower 70s
with a strong west and northwest wind averaging some 12-22 mph. Much
drier air will be in place by Sunday night, and we will enjoy a
comfortable night lows in the 40s. Those are about gone for this
year, so enjoy them while you can.

REST OF THE WEEK: Monday and Tuesday will feature some
nice spring weather, although moisture may sneak back in enough on
Tuesday afternoon to allow the development of scattered afternoon
storms. Highs will be in the middle 70s Monday and upper 70s on
Tuesday. Lows on Tuesday morning will probably edge down into the 40s
once again. By Tuesday night, strong low pressure will be forming
near Dallas. There are signs that we could get a good round of
showers and storms Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as a warm
front comes north. Then, as the low moves northeast, we will see an
overnight round of showers and storms. Those could be strong to severe.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: The Serro Grande Fire near Los
Alamos, New Mexico had been burning for seven days. What had started
as a prescribed burn in the Bandelier National Monument became New
Mexico's worst recorded wildfire as winds suddenly began to gust to
over 40 mph. Quickly burning out of control, the fire began to
threaten the city of Los Alamos and the Los Alamos National Labs.
It would take two months to control the fire that burned 48,000 acres
and 235 homes.
