...Let It Snow!...

As I write this for our 10:30 forecast deadline Friday
night, it looks like our long snow drought will come to an end here in
Birmingham. Saturday is a great day for a snowstorm anywhere, but
especially here in Central Alabama. I would have still loved it back
in my school days, but it would have seemed like a missed opportunity
for a snow day out of class…

SNOWY SATURDAY: The collision between Arctic air
spilling in from the north and moisture coming north from a Gulf low
is resulting in a significant snowfall for Alabama on this Saturday.
A heavy snow warning is in effect for parts of Central Alabama where
as much as 3-6 inches of snow may fall. 2-4 inch amounts will be
widespread from south of I-20 to around US-80. Snowfall amounts will
diminish as you head north or south of the warning area. One to two
inches is expected in the I-20 corridor. Temperatures in the
precipitation area will have a hard time getting above freezing today
and it will be windy will a cold north wind averaging 10-20 mph.
Skies will clear quickly this evening and the mercury will plummet
into the teens across the northern half of the state. Colder spots
with snowcover could get in the single digits. Travel is strongly
discouraged in the snow areas through Sunday morning.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Temperatures should move back into
the 40s on Sunday with a good complement of sunshine. Roads should
make a quick recovery during the afternoon. With readings falling
well back into the 20s on Sunday night, freezing of left over snow and
water on roadways could cause more significant travel problems. In
the old days, we would have issued a Traveler's Advisory. Monday
will be partly sunny, but clouds will increase late in the day with a
shower possible overnight. Don't think there will be any wintry
precip, but let's take one storm at a time. A cold rain will be
likely on Tuesday. Wednesday will feature temporary clearing with
more precipitation Wednesday night.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Ice Bowl II will be tonight in Green
Bay, with temperatures falling below zero during the NFL game between
the Giants and Packers. It won't be as cold as the original Ice Bowl
on December 31, 1967, when the temperature during the playoff game
between the Cowboys and Packers was a numbing -13F. Bart Starr
carried the ball into the end zone in the final seconds for a 17-13
victory for the Pack.

SNOW STORIES: All right. It has been nearly eight
years since we last saw measurable snow in Birmingham. Many old-
timers (like me) surely have some great snow stories to tell. So in
between running outside to freeze your hands and ears off, grab a mug
of hot chocolate and share your favorite Alabama snow tales. Just go
to the alabamawx.com blog to read mine and post yours.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: An incredible snowmelt was
underway across the Mid-Atlantic following two weeks of heavy snows.
At Buckstown, Pennsylvania, there was 44 inches of snow on the ground
on January 16th. By the 19th, there was one inch. In addition, 2.04
inches of rain fell during the four day period. Temperatures soared
into the 60s as far north as Vermont. The flooding that resulted was
of historic proportions on the Delaware, Susquehanna, upper Ohio,
James and Potomac Rivers. At beautiful Harpers Ferry, WV, the water
crested at 31 feet, some 13 feet above flood stage. Many bridges and
roads were damaged as well as the historic B&O Canal trail. When I
visited there on my first ever Civil War tour over a year later, I was
amazed at the destruction. Some flood stages were 20 feet above
normal! At Point of Rocks, Maryland, streamflows on the Potomac
reached 312,000 cubic feet per second, second only to those caused by
Hurricane Agnes. Thirty three people died in the flowing.
