...Snow Event Ending...

Ecstatic folks in places like Selma and Demopolis and Montgomery.
Fairly happy folks in Clanton and Alabaster. Surprised folks in
places like Pensacola. Mildly disappointed folks in Birmingham, but
pretty happy in Alabaster. Very unhappy folks in places like
Huntsville and Millport. Just another Alabama winter weather event…

ACCUMULATIONS: The best accumulations have been across
Central Alabama from Sumter County over to Dallas County, where 2.2
inches fell at Cuba and 5 inches near Selma. Two inches fell at
Linden in Marengo County. Further north, amounts were generally one
inch or less and extending up to the Tuscaloosa and Birmingham areas
over into northern Cleburne County. The snow was ending from the
northwest this afternoon and drier air filters in. Additional
accumulations will be light across northern areas. Across Central
Alabama, additional accumulations from ½ to 1 inch will fall mainly
east of I-65 and north of I-85 this afternoon.

TONIGHT: Skies will clear quickly this evening and cold
air will flow in as the low passes to our southeast. Temperatures
will plunge into the teens, aided in some locations by a snowcover.
There will be problems with moisture and slush freezing on some roads
tonight. Bridges and overpasses will be of particular concern. Be
careful with pipes and check on friends and neighbors. Protect pets
from the cold.

TOMORROW: Road conditions may be an issue for local
pastors to consider in the morning, but problems should not be
widespread. Still, we want you to check road conditions before
heading off to church in the morning. With a good supply of sunshine,
temperatures will warm into the 40s and road conditions should rapidly
improve. Tomorrow night will be cold with lows well into the 20s by
morning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will see a warm up as our winds
turn to the southeast. Another storm system will approach late
Monday, increasing our clouds. A cold rain is likely on Tuesday. As
it exits, there will only be a brief respite before the next system.
It will arrive Wednesday night giving us more rain on Thursday.
Another wet weather system will arrive on Saturday and there are hints
it could stick around for much of the weekend with some generous
rainfall amounts. We won't complain.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Swarm of 14 tornadoes across the
south affected parts of Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas.
The most violent tornado was an F4 that occurred near Kosciusko MS,
but an F3 tornado in Fayette County Tennessee was the most deadly,
causing 3 fatalities. An F3 tornado struck Cullman Alabama during the
late afternoon hours. Thirty five people were injured along the
tornado's fifteen mile path. Tractor trailers were tossed like toys
at the Wal Mart distribution center. Two other tornado touchdowns
were reported in Alabama near Wilsonville in Shelby County and near
Brierfield in Bibb County.
