....Records in Jeopardy?...

Temperatures are on the warm side across Alabama on this Saturday
afternoon. Widespread readings in the 80s are being observed. Highs
today will top out some 15-20 degrees above normal this afternoon and
on Sunday.

HOT, HOT, HOT: The record high for March 24th in Birmingham is 89F.
Officially, we will probably fall shorts of that by a few degrees.
Tonight will feature beautiful spring conditions, with fair skies and
a low in the upper 50s. By tomorrow, it looks like high pressure will
be in even stronger control of Alabama's weather, and readings may be
a couple of degrees warmer.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Usually we look to the west for our cold fronts. If
you are looking west, you will miss our next cool front. The front
will bring increased cloudiness and cooler readings over eastern
sections of the state on Monday. The front will also spark some
thunderstorms as it moves westward . Eastern sections may stay in the
70s with the increased cloud cover. All areas will back off into the
70s on Tuesday and stay that way for much of the week under partly
cloudy skies. There will be a chance of showers and storms around the
periphery of the sprawling high pressure systems to our east. If we
are lucky enough to see it set up over us, we could receive some
beneficial rains. Goodness knows we could use it, with our rainfall
deficit over seven inches and climbing.

TROLLING: James calls it trolling. Long range forecasting. The
extended outlook. Voodoo land. But if you can put any stock in the
evening runs of the GFS, you would think we are in for a little relief
from our dry conditions the first week of April with a couple of
vigorous disturbances in a big East Coast trough.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT TODAY: Severe weather will be possible again
today across parts of the Plains as a big upper level low lifts out to
the northeast. Activity is expected to become severe over Kansas,
Nebraska, Iowa and parts of Missouri as shear from the low enhances
thunderstorms. A dryline across western Oklahoma and Texas will
trigger potentially tornadic thunderstorms by this afternoon. Storm
chasers will be out in droves, I suspect.

ON THIS DATE IN 1944: Royal Air Force crews flying bombing missions
over Germany encounter the tremendous upper level winds we now know as
the Jet Stream. Scientists at the University of Chicago gave the name
to the high altitude ribbon of high winds in 1947.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: "The Governor's Tornado." An early morning
twister hop-scotched a
thirteen mile path across the west part of Atlanta. It was so named
because it caused considerable damage to the governor's mansion.
Hundreds of expensive homes, businesses and apartment complexes were
damaged. Total losses were estimated at $56 million. Three people
lost their lives in the storm and another 152 were injured by the F3
tornado.
