ALMOST LIKE SUMMER: Get ready for what should be the warmest weekend
so far this year for Alabama. Afternoon temperatures will rise into
the 82 to 86 degree range both tomorrow and Sunday with a good supply
of sunshine through scattered clouds. These values are 15 to 20
degrees above normal for late March, and very close to record levels.
It will feel almost like June.
NEXT WEEK: While we enjoy a warm and dry weekend, a deep upper air
trough will begin to lift out of the Southwest U.S., and bring some
active thunderstorms to the Southern Plains. But, as it heads toward
the Great Lakes, the system will weaken, and at this time it looks
like the impact on Alabama will be rather minimal. We will continue
to mention the chance of a few scattered showers on Tuesday, but with
very little upper support and limited moisture, the chance of
beneficial rain looks small. Most likely, we will have to wait until
April before a good rain event returns to Alabama.
FIRE ALERT: The lack of rain continues to cause problems for Alabama;
14 counties remain under a fire alert, and the fire danger is high
for all 67 counties. The bottom line is that any outdoor burning is
discouraged.
AT THE BEACH: More very nice weather for the central Gulf coast this
weekend and into the first part of next week; mostly sunny days and
clear nights with afternoon highs along the immediate coast in the 67
to 70 degree range. Sea surface temperatures remain in the upper 60s,
which will keep afternoon temperatures on the coast 15 degrees cooler
than the northern half of the state. However, just a few miles
inland, highs will rise into the low to mid 80s over Mobile and
Baldwin counties.
PRIME TIME SPECIAL: My friend Bill Castle has been working hard
putting together the television version of Storm Alert 2007. If you
missed our annual severe weather awareness tour across the state in
February, this TV special will give you the chance to see most of the
video elements we used. It runs Sunday evening on ABC 33/40 from 6:00
until 7:00 p.m. The show will features video pieces on the March 1
tornado outbreak in Alabama, the 30th anniversary of the F5 tornado
that tore through the Smithfield neighborhood of North Birmingham,
and much more. I hope you will be able to watch.
MY LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sorry, Miss Molly fans, J.B. is taking
the afternoon off today. Actually, I am sitting with J.B. and Brian
Peters right now at the annual Southeast Severe Storm Symposium at
Mississippi State University. I am speaking this afternoon on
"Gearing Up For A High Risk Severe Weather Day", and Brian will be
speaking tomorrow morning on the new ABC 33/40 SKYCAM network. I have
attended this event every year since it's inception seven years ago,
and always enjoy seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Tonight
will be driving down to Pap's Place in Ackerman (about 20 miles south
of Starkville) for the annual feed at what I believe to be the
world's greatest home cooking restaurant. Be looking for pictures on
the ABC 33/40 blog!
