...Near Record Warmth...
I am envious of almost everyone from our weather office. They are at
the always interesting, always stimulating Southeastern Severe Weather
Symposium at Mississippi State University this weekend. Hours upon
hours of severe weather research and insight. It truly is a weather
person's "happy place." Oh, it's my own fault. I could not attend
because of other commitments, but I still will indulge in my own
little weekend weather pity party…
CHECKING THE RECORD BOOKS: With temperatures running some 20 degrees
above normal, we have to start thinking about records. The high
temperature records for the 24th and 25th are probably out of reach,
although setting or tying a record is not out of the question.
Today's record is 89 set in 1929 and tomorrow's is 88 set one hundred
years ago in 1907.
WEEKEND WEATHER: I guess I have let the cat out of the bag. It's
going to be warm. High pressure has a stranglehold on Alabama in t
his first weekend of spring in Alabama. The better chance for setting
a record probably comes tomorrow, when highs may reach the upper 80s.
But today will be no slouch in the warmth department either, with
highs into the middle 80s. Expect partly cloudy and dry conditions
all weekend.
THE WEEK AHEAD: As is often the case, spring warmth is sometimes
followed by a cold front that comes in from the east, or through the
backdoor. We call them back door cold fronts. One will approach
Alabama on Monday. This means increased clouds and lower temperatures
in the east, probably in the 70s. Meanshilem ahead of the front,
temperatures will still make the 80s and there may be enough fuel and
a spark to trigger thunderstorms as it migrates westward. That will
be interesting. Behind the front, readings back off into the 70s by
day, with 50s at night. With the strong anticyclone holding to our
east, we could see a chance of showers or storms as the "ring of fire"
or convection around the periphery of the high, but that is not very
likely. A weakening trough may bring a chance of showers Thursday,
but there appears to be a better chance by later in the weekend.
DEFICIT WATCH: Not the Federal one, the Birmingham rainfall one. No
rain in the rain bucket this week, so our precipitation deficit has
now climbed to over seven inches, the most I remember in quite some
time.
ON THIS DATE IN 1912: Kansas City, Missouri was bombed by twenty
five inches of snow in twenty four hours for their greatest snowfall
ever. The snowfall total at Kansas City was nearly twice that of any
other storm of modern record. A record forty inches of snow fell
during the month of March that year and the total of sixty seven
inches for the winter season was also a record. Olathe, Kansas
received thirty seven inches of snow in the storm establishing a
single storm record for the state.
