...The Weather Stays Warm and Dry...

Today is a new day, but we have an old weather forecast. Warm and dry
weather again is the story for Alabama today, and this pattern won't
change through the weekend. On the maps a major upper air low has
formed south of San Diego, and in response to that feature an upper
air ridge will strengthen across the Deep South, which will keep the
rain well to the west of Alabama for the next four to five days. Also,
afternoon temperatures will remain 10 to 15 degrees above normal for
mid to late March, with afternoon high temperatures generally in the
78 to 83 degree range. While a few high clouds will pass by from time
to time, we expect a good supply of sunshine on a daily basis.

NEXT WEEK: The upper low will weaken and lift to the north-northeast
early next week, and it has the chance of dragging a band of showers
into Alabama Monday night and Tuesday. However, due to the strength of
the upper ridge place and the weakening dynamics north of Alabama, we
sure don't expect a big rain event. In fact, the upper air pattern
continues to favor below normal rainfall and above normal temperatures
through the end of March.

WE NEED SOME RAIN: Birmingham's rain total so far in 2007 is only
6.57", which is 7.25" below normal. The Alabama Forestry Commission
has issued a Fire Alert for 14 Alabama counties due to the dry
conditions, including Jefferson, Shelby, and Tuscaloosa. See more
details on the Fire Alert on the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog.

AT THE BEACH: If you are planning a trip to the Gulf coast for the
rest of this week for spring break, the weather will remain dry and
mild through Sunday with mostly sunny days and clear nights. Due to a
southerly flow over the cooler ocean (sea water temperatures along the
coast remain in the 66 to 69 degree range), afternoon highs will be in
the 67 to 71 degree range along the immediate coast, with low 80s just
a few miles inland. Most of next week also looks dry and pleasant.

ENTERPRISE TORNADO UPGRADED: National Weather Service survey teams
taking a second look at the damage in Coffee County have upgraded the
March 1 Enterprise tornado to an EF4, with maximum winds of 170 mph.
Most of us who have seen the damage in person are not surprised by
this. This tornado killed 9 people in Enterprise, including 8 students
at Enterprise High School.

PRIME TIME SPECIAL: The TV edition of Storm Alert 2007 will be on ABC
33/40 this Sunday evening (March 25) from 6:00 until 7:00. If you
missed seeing our annual severe weather awareness tour across Alabama
in person this year, you will be able to see most of the video
elements on the TV special. Of course, we will also have segments on
the March 1 tornado outbreak across Alabama and Georgia.

TIDBITS: Chicago was soaked with 1.07" of rain yesterday. The hottest
place in the nation was in far western Oklahoma, where Gage soared to
91 degrees. Cold spot yesterday morning was Saranac Lake, NY with 16
degrees below zero.
