...Warm Afternoons Ahead...

Warm and dry weather will continue to headline our forecast through
the weekend as a benign early spring weather pattern continues. An
deep upper low will form over the northern Gulf of California during
the next 36 hours, and won't be in a hurry to move anywhere. This will
pump up an upper ridge across the Southeast U.S., setting the stage
for the incredibly nice weather around here. Afternoon high
temperatures will run about 10 to 15 degrees above normal through the
weekend, meaning we can expect highs in the 78 to 83 degree range for
most communities. While a few high clouds will move overhead from time
to time, each day should feature a good supply of sunshine.

The storm system over the Southwest U.S. will finally lift northeast
early next week, and will bring our next chance of showers late
Monday, Monday night, and possibly into Tuesday. The dynamics will
weaken as the system moves northeast, and at this time we don't expect
a significant chance of severe thunderstorms or heavy rain. Then,
another upper air trough forms over the southwest part of the nation
toward the middle of next week, which should keep the trend intact...
above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall through the end of
the month of March.

GETTING VERY DRY: Birmingham's rain total since January 1 is only
6.57", and the rainfall deficiency for 2007 a whopping 7.05". April
and May tend to be wet and stormy months, so hopefully we will be able
to catch up a bit before the long, hot summer arrives. We should note
that a dry spring can often set the stage for a hot summer due to the
lack of good soil moisture. When the soil is dry, the sun doesn't have
to evaporate soil moisture, and more energy is devoted to heating the
ground, which in turn heats the air.

AT THE BEACH: Look for a string of sunny days along the Gulf coast
through the weekend; great weather for the spring break crowds on the
beaches all the way from Panama City to Gulf Shores. Sea water
temperatures are still a bit on the cool side, however, running
generally in the 67 to 69 degree range. This, in turn, is keeping
temperatures along the immediate coast a little cooler. The high
yesterday at our SKYCAM site atop the Phoenix All-Suites yesterday in
Gulf Shores was only 66 degrees; 12 degrees cooler than Birmingham.
Highs along the coast for the next five days will range from 66 to 72,
but just a few miles inland the temperature will probably reach the
low 80s during the peak of the daytime heating process.

75 YEARS AGO TODAY: Alabama's most deadly tornado outbreak... Official
U. S. Weather Bureau tabulations said that 268 persons were killed in
Alabama with 1,874 injured. However, a large amount of research from
our own J.B. Elliott indicates that about 300 Alabamians killed and
3,000 were injured. Some of the hardest hit counties included
Tuscaloosa (downtown Northport was ravaged), Shelby (Columbiana was
hit hard), Chilton, Dallas, Marengo, Perry, Talladega, Hale, and
Coosa.
