...Welcome To Spring...

Spring officially arrives tonight at 7:07 CDT, meaning today will have
around 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness since the sun is
directly over the equator. And, we expect spring-like weather again
today with a partly sunny sky and a high up in the mid 70s.

MORE DRY DAYS AHEAD: At this point it looks like the dry spell will
last all the way through the upcoming weekend. A strong upper air
storm is forecast to develop over the Southwest U.S. during the next
few days, and it will be in no rush to move. The unsettled weather
associated with the big upper air storm is forecast to remain well to
the west, leaving Alabama under an upper air ridge, which will keep us
mild and dry for at least the next five to six days. Strong to severe
thunderstorms are possible in the general area from Texas northward
into the Southern Plains tomorrow through Friday, but all of that
active weather will remain well to the west of Alabama. At this time
it really looks like our next significant rain event is 7 to 10 days
away, and even then we are not totally convinced that we will see that
much rain across Alabama based on the forecast upper air pattern.

GETTING DRY: Our rain total for the month of March in Birmingham is
only 1.01". In fact, we have seen measurable rain on only two days
this month (March 1 and March 15)... and our rain deficiency for the
year is now 6.84". Overall conditions will favor below normal rainfall
and above normal temperatures for the rest of March, and possibly into
the first week of April.

AT THE BEACH: The biggest influence on temperatures along the Gulf
coast is the ocean; and a check of the sea surface temperature last
night at Pensacola Beach (a nice midpoint between Gulf Shores and
Destin) showed a cool 67 degrees. This kept the high at our Gulf
Shores SKYCAM site yesterday to only 66 degrees, 9 degrees cooler than
Birmingham's high of 75. The weather won't change all that much along
the Gulf coast for the rest of the week; partly sunny days and mostly
fair nights. At this time we don't expect any rain through the
weekend, and along the immediate coast the daily high will be around
70, with mid to upper 70s just a few miles inland. I can't remember we
had an entire spring break week rain-free down at the beach.

WILCOX COUNTY TORNADO RATING CHANGE: The National Weather Service has
revised their EF scale rating for the Wilcox County tornado on March 1
that killed one person at Millers Ferry (north of Camden)... it is now
officially an EF4; the wind speed estimate was changed to 185 mph
based on the destruction of at least two well constructed wood frame
homes.

HODGEPODGE: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Death Valley,
California with 95 degrees. There is a slight risk of severe weather
tomorrow from the western part of Texas northward through the Southern
Plains states and into parts of the Midwest; in the broad area from
Del Rio to Des Moines.
