...Warm Up Ahead...

Persistent clouds over North and Central Alabama last night kept
temperatures above the freezing mark. Still, it was cool, with
temperatures in the 30s. After a cool start, temperatures today will
warm to near 60 degrees, still below normal for the date. Some light
precipitation moved into Northwest Alabama during the evening hours,
but it was not reaching the ground for the most part. Some
windshields might have seen a few sprinkles.
FOR YOUR SUNDAY: The sprinkles and clouds were associated with a
disturbance in the northwesterly flow over Alabama. That
northwesterly flow is on the backside of a very deep trough over the
East Coast. The trough is lifting out to the northwest, and the upper
flow over Alabama will start to become more zonal, or west to east
during the day today. Meanwhile, at the surface, high pressure will
be moving eastward just to our north and our winds will become more
easterly and then southeasterly as a result. This will put an end to
the advection of cold air in to the region and we will gradually warm
up. The high will move out into the Atlantic, pumping in moisture on
southerly winds, but ostensibly keeping a weak cold front at bay to
our north through Tuesday. We might see a few showers by Wednesday,
but no real significant rain is expected before next weekend.
Temperatures will edge back up into the 70s by Monday.
WEEKEND STORM SYSTEM: By early Friday, a strong storm system will be
organizing over West Texas. The low will move northeast into Oklahoma
during the day. A significant outbreak of severe weather may occur
across the southern Plains on Friday. This low will lift northeast
and weaken before the rain and storms have a chance to reach Alabama.
Another low will develop over the Arklatex and lift northeast by
Saturday night. Rain and storms will enter West Alabama by late
Sunday afternoon and continue through the night as the slow moving
system lifts northeastward. Severe weather will be a possibility, as
well as some heavy rains.
ON THIS DATE IN 2004: From the time it touched down near Ellington,
Missouri around 1:05 p.m. on March 18, 1925, it was tornado of
superlatives. Racing northeastward at 72 mph, the first major town in
its sights was Annapolis, Missouri. The town was 90% destroyed by the
twister. Around 2 p.m., the storm became a twin funnel monster. The
town of Gorham lay directly in its path, and it totally annihilated
the town. Just minutes later, it crossed into Illinois and struck
Murphrysboro. There, the most single fatalities from a single tornado
in U.S. history occurred (234). 33 people died in a school at DeSoto
IL, the most fatalities ever recorded in a U.S. school from a tornado.
Rated by experts as an F5, the infamous Tri-State Tornado covered a
distance of 219 miles in three hours and 29 minutes. It is the
longest continuous path length in U.S. history and the deadliest
single tornado in U.S. history (689 people dead),
