...Mild Afternoons For The Weekend...
Look for another big warm-up across Alabama today following a frosty
morning. Temperatures will climb nearly 40 degrees today, with most
communities reaching the low 70s, about 10 degrees above normal for
November 24. The air remains very dry and we will forecast maximum
available sunshine again today for Alabama and most of the adjacent
states. Great weather for the big shopping frenzy.
We don't see much change through the rest of the Thanksgiving holiday
weekend with sunny mild days and clear chilly nights through Sunday.
However, as we enjoy picture perfect weather, our eyes continue to be
focused on bitterly cold air that covers much of Alaska and the
Northwest Territory of Canada. Northway, Alaska dropped to 42 degrees
below zero yesterday morning, and that cold air will be dropping
southward during the next week as the upper air winds begin to change.
This means some changes in our weather next week.
NEXT RAIN EVENT: For the moment, it looks like our next significant
rain event will come late Wednesday, Wednesday night, and Thursday of
next week as the leading edge of that really cold air slowly drifts
into the state. A few strong storms are possible in advance of the
front, but the latest computer model data doesn't suggest a classic
setup for severe weather here in Alabama.
Following the rain and storms, a change to colder weather will begin
Thursday night and Friday. There is considerable conflict in various
computer models concerning depth of the cold air that reaches us, and
the amount of lingering moisture in the cold air. If the cold air is
allowed to plow in here without much modification, we might be in the
30s all day Friday (December 1) with some risk of lingering snow
flurries. On the other hand, if the upper trough bypasses us to the
north, temperatures won't be that cold. For now all we can do is stay
tuned... we should have much more clarity on the situation by Monday.
FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY: A total of 34 tornadoes touched down in Alabama,
killing four people and injuring many more. That is the greatest
number of tornadoes in one day in state history; read more on this
historic weather event on the ABC 33/40 Weather Blog.
ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Wet and windy were the words yesterday for
the upper Atlantic coast. The rain total in New York City was .71" as
the mercury hovered in the mid 40s all day. Not the best day for the
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. To the north, Providence, RI was
soaked with 2.43".
Our friends in Alaska are very cold for late November. Yesterday in
Juneau, 18 inches of snow fell on the city; their high during the day
was only 15 degrees. In Fairbanks, the high was 10 below zero; 18
degrees below the normal high of 8 degrees above zero. In Northway,
following their low of -42 the high yesterday was -24. A warming trend
continued across the southern states yesterday; the high in Dallas was
77 degrees. Hottest place in the nation was Laredo, TX with 84.

MOTORCYCLE RIDE--DECEMBER 2nd
BENEFITING THE ELDRIDGE CHILDREN'S HOME
Come join us in a fantastic motorcycle ride with a great cause!
It's the 4th Annual Eldridge Children's Home Benefit Ride. The home,
located in Eldridge just off Hwy 78 and State Hwy 13 in Northwest
Alabama, has been in operation since 1948. It houses 30 children in
all age groups; they are educated in public schools, attend local
churches and are raised within the campus in homes. The home accepts
no state or federal money and operates on donations from area churches
and individuals.
Motorcycle riders get together for a ride to benefit this home. Riders
are able to fulfill a special "Christmas Wish List" from each child
and help operate this home all year long. Riders are encouraged to
bring gift cards from any retail outlet or give a donation via check,
made payable to Eldridge Children's Home.
This home has a 501(c)3 status, so donations are tax deductible.
Weather will not be a factor--just be there for the children.
The first Saturday in December, all roads lead to Eldridge.
