DOWNTOWN DRAMA: The new ABC 33/40 skycam network sure had some drama today.
A major downtown warehouse fire was vividly captured on the skycam mounted
atop the Compass Bank downtown. The smoke could also be seen in the distance
from the Inverness site.
NOW TO THE WEATHER: It is heating up and the chance of rain does
not look good at all for the next several days. A cluster of thunderstorms
in Illinois and Indiana moved due south overnight causing a number of
damaging wind reports and hail in Kentucky. A couple of those showers
survived long enough to give 0.11 of an inch of rain to Huntsville. It
finally fizzled in West Alabama.
We think there will be a slight chance of a shower or a thunderstorm
late Sunday and a slightly better chance next Tuesday. Probably our better
chance will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Meanwhile, look for high temperatures
90 to 92 for the next several days.
IN THE TROPICS: Getting a bit more interesting. A broad surface low
pressure area was located near Belize today creating lots of clouds and
showers over the NW Caribbean, the Eastern Yucatan and West Cuba. Several
weather models projects this system to move north or NW to NW of the Yucatan
Peninsula and then into the SW or Central Gulf. Way too early to tell if
this will be Alberto. Sea surface temperatures are becoming more favorable
over the Southern Gulf, but winds aloft are not so. At buoy no. 42003 300
land miles south of Panama City, the water temperature was 83.5 today. It
was 82 over the NE Gulf, but only 78.6 off Panama City Beach.
AT THE BEACH: It is going to be fairly hot through the weekend with
highs near 92 a few miles inland, but if you stay near the water's edge, it
will be more like 88. The risk of a shower or thunderstorm is very small, at
least through Sunday.
PROWLING AROUND THE COUNTRY: That big NE coastal storm was still
giving rain to New England today, but not as much wind. This storm has
dumped 6.80 inches of rain at East Falmouth in Eastern Massachusetts. Boston
got 3 inches. Remember, this is the same region of the country that had
massive flooding not long ago...113 in Death Valley was the USA hotspot
Wednesday...37 at Lake Tahoe was the coolest this morning, so that means
that both the high and low were in California. One of the lowest
temperatures I could find on the entire North American Continent was 20 at
Alert in extreme Northern Canada.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our newly married oldest granddaughter
and her husband visited us last night and Molly was in hog heaven. She has
always loved Sara, but we try to keep her from becoming a pest. I sometimes
call Molly "Miss Personality," because I have never seen a dog that is so
glad to see any human being. She will greet a deliveryman like she has known
him forever. When my wife found Molly at Layton, Utah, she said Molly was
the same way then as a very small puppy. She kept jumping up in her cage
wanting people to notice her. That is one reason that my wife chose Molly.
You can bet I am very happy that Little Miss Molly showed so much enthusiasm
in her little cage in Layton, Utah on that particular day. I would never
have had the pleasure of being the little girl's pal. Life goes on. She has
meant $Millions to me. - J. B. Elliott
