BEGGING FOR RAIN: But not much chance for the next several days as
warmer and drier air aloft tends to cut off shower and thunderstorm
activity. Our only hope is for some stray thunderstorms to come down out of
the Midwest in the NW flow aloft and approach us from the north. Could see
just a few of those over extreme North Alabama late today and this evening.
Otherwise, we are leaving them out of the forecast until Sunday. Even then,
the risk is very low. We believe our better chance of getting some showers
and storms will be about Monday and Tuesday of next week.

IN THE TROPICS: Some strong thunderstorms were moving off the west
coast of Africa, but it would be unusual for tropical development this
early. The Eastern Atlantic sea surface temperatures are normally relatively
cool early in the season. The Gulf of Mexico is calm and collected. It is
interesting to note that one of our two most used weather models is showing
a closed low pressure area over the Yucatan by late Saturday with pouring
rain over the NW Caribbean and the Yucatan. Our other most trusted model is
not thinking that way.

A ROLLING WALL OF DUST: It happened yesterday afternoon in Southern
Arizona. My wife, who grew up in Phoenix, has seen it many times. We were
visiting further north in Cottonwood, Arizona once and a late afternoon wall
of dust moved in from the south with winds to about 60 mph. Yesterday there
was scattered wind damage over a good part of Southern Arizona and the
sudden wall of dust dropped the visibility to zero in only seconds.

SEVERE WEATHER: A slight risk for this afternoon and tonight from
West and Middle Tennessee north through Kentucky, Indiana and West Ohio.
Also for the Northern Plains, Northern Rockies and the east part of
Washington and Oregon.

DATELINE HATTIESBURG: That South Mississippi city was hard hit by
Katrina last summer with literally thousands of trees uprooted. Now it is
extremely dry there and all of those fallen trees and brush is rich fuel for
wildfires. They have received only 15 inches of rain all year and normal, as
of today, is over 30 inches. Only a sprinkle so far in June. Mobile is also
very short on rainfall. Their 2006 total is 13.76 inches-a deficiency of
16.49!

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: Florida leads the U. S. in lightning
deaths and injuries. Lightning kills about 100 people across the USA each
year. In the period 1995-2004, Alabama had 18 lightning deaths ranking 6 in
the nation. Florida had 85-the number 1 rank.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I may have to rename Little Miss Molly
to Little Miss Columbo or Miss Sherlock. She is a true detective at heart.
Out
very early this morning in the cool of the morning, the first thing she did
was stop in an area of crabgrass and patiently sniff the entire length of 22
blades of grass. I counted them. Someone reminded me that might be her
method of receiving e-mail. Molly and I sure had a nice walk. On the way
back, she saw Lisa and Bridgette come up on the walking track. Molly forced
me to turn around and go back and meet them. They are both Shih-tzus and
really like each other...just enough breeze to quiver the leaves on the Old
Crow Motel reminding me of the aspen trees in the Rockies. They are commonly
known as quaking aspen, because the least bit of wind will make them quiver
in the bright sunlight that creates a beautiful scene, especially in autumn
when the aspen turn brilliant yellow. We finally heard two old crows
yesterday for the first time in several weeks. We miss them, but life goes
on.
