GREETINGS FROM CHARLOTTE: This report is coming to you from the road.
Flying today to New York City. The next report you receive will be from
Gotham late tonight. It is a busman's holiday for me this week, with a
series of meetings in Manhattan through Tuesday afternoon. Then it is play
time through Thursday with several fun activities planned.
Up early Wednesday and head to a real NYC breakfast at Viand's on the Upper
East Side and on to the Natural History Museum. I have never stopped by the
Dakota, where John Lennon was killed, and I plan to do that. Then across
Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum. Grab a quick lunch on the patio at
the Boathouse and over to the Frick for some more art. Then a quick change
and the Broadway production Spamalot at the Shubert. Drop in Sardi's maybe
and then a late dinner at Marseilles.
A Thursday morning trip to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty (or
Statute of Liberty as Kramer on Seinfeld calls it.) Then a walk across the
Brooklyn Bridge and real coal fired New York Style Pizza at Totonno's in
Brooklyn. A quick walk through Chinatown and Little Italy, then over to the
U.N. Then a walk up 42nd street to Grand Central. Maybe some Oysters
Rockefeller at the Oyster Bar in Grand Central. Then it is the Number 6
train to 161st street and the ultimate baseball experience, the Yankees and
Red Sox in Yankee Stadium. Fit in dinner at Tamarind and the Empire State
Building in there somewhere and it will be a fun time.
A FEW SHOWERS/STORMS: Turns out the NAM was right in the model battle. A
few showers and storms were popping up over Central Alabama this afternoon.
They will continue into the overnight hours. Stronger storms were in
Tennessee, poised to move into the Tennessee Valley. Temperatures had
risen into the middle to upper 80s in most locations, helping to trigger the
storms. The showers and storms were a bit of a surprise, as most of us had
put our stock in the drier GFS for this afternoon and tonight.
THE WEEK AHEAD: Northwesterly flow situations can be kind of sneaky at
times, so surprises are not out of the question. It is pretty certain that
a couple of disturbances will be spit at us. The main one appears to
approach on Wednesday, bringing with it a chance of showers and storms. It
looks like those showers and storms may be with us through Thursday. I had
hoped we would be able to call for dry weather on Friday and Saturday, but
it looks like scattered showers and thunderstorms might be in the offing.
TROPICS: There is a disturbance over the western Caribbean. It should move
north over Cuba and the Bahamas. The Hurricane Center does not expect it to
undergo "significant development, but I would not be surprised if a tropical
depression did form.
ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Major 4 day storm in New England brings 14 inches of
rainfall to southern Connecticut. 23 dams were breached and 2 failed. $276
million in damage resulted from the flooding.
