...Hot And Dry...

GOOD MORNING: One week ago, we were talking about the possibility of a tropical depression forming in the area of the western Caribbean. That area of disturbed weather has been percolating all week and by the time you read this, the first tropical depression of the 2006 Atlantic Hurricane Season will likely have formed. More about that in a moment.

ANOTHER HOT ONE: Temperatures on Friday were quite warm to downright hot across the area. Look for temperatures today to be 2-3 degrees hotter than yesterday, with most locations in the lower to middle 90s. Skies will be mostly sunny. There is just a tiny chance of a storm today, and just a slightly better chance tomorrow. Temperatures tomorrow will be in the middle 90s across much of the area.

MONDAY AND THE WEEK AHEAD: A front should approach the area from the north on Monday, giving us a chance for isolated storms. Behind that front, we will experience slightly drier air with temperatures more near normal for much of the week ahead. High pressure will set up shop over the Ohio Valley, keeping a watchful eye on our fine weather pattern through midweek. By Thursday, the high will be far enough east to allow a southerly flow to return. Moisture levels will be on the increase by then and perhaps we will see a more regular pattern of diurnal showers and storms.

ALBERTO: We may have the first tropical storm of the Atlantic season later today. It will be named Alberto. Look for it to make landfall north of Tampa on Monday as a strong tropical storm. It will cross the Florida Panhandle moving offshore of the coast of the Carolinas, passing east of Cape Cod and perhaps to the Canadian Maritimes by midweek. The GFDL suggests it could become a hurricane.

ON THIS DATE IN 1958: A woman in El Dorado, Kansas was sucked through the window of her house by a tornado and blown sixty feet. She landed beside a broken phonograph record, entitled appropriately: “Stormy Weather.” Researchers at the National Severe Storms Laboratory were studying the violent tornado with a primitive Doppler radar called a continuous wave radar. As they did, they viewed the first tornadic velocity signature.
