TROPICS A BIT NERVOUS: There are increasing indications that some type of tropical situation may be getting its act together over the NW Caribbean. A low pressure area has formed a couple of hundred miles east of the Yucatan. It is fairly close to land and winds upstairs are marginally conducive for additional development. A tropical depression could still form in the next day or so as it moves slowly northward. The NHC is considering sending a reconnaissance aircraft into the area Saturday afternoon.

The projected path? Depends on which model you prefer. I have looked at so many today that my eyes look like a Manhattan street map. One model veers it over into the West Gulf; still another one lets it mosey toward the north in the general direction of the Louisiana-Mississippi coast. The most favored scenario seems to be a possible landfall in North Florida a couple of hundred miles or so north of Tampa about Tuesday and moving across the peninsula into the Atlantic and moving up the east coast. That far out means that nothing is sealed in stone. If that happens, it will keep Alabama in dry weather. Projected rainfall from this storm is as high as 8 to 9 inches across parts of North-Central Florida. If this system does develop into a tropical storm, the name will be Alberto. The sea surface temperature is 83 across most of the Caribbean and 82 in the Bay of Campeche. Now let’s go back to...

SWEET (DRY) HOME ALABAMA: Very little chance of rain over the next few days. We do not expect any Saturday. Any that show up on Sunday would be
very scarce and only a small risk on Monday. We need to post a watch at the Tennessee border just in case a family of thunderstorms migrates southward from the Midwest in the prevailing NW wind flow aloft. If the scenario with the possible tropical development turns out, it would cause the winds across
North Alabama to become northerly on Tuesday and drop our humidity a bit. Meanwhile, look for temperatures near and just above 90 for the next 3 days.

THE WHITE SANDS OF ALABAMA: Best we can tell now, the weekend looks good along the Alabama-Northwest Florida coast with more sun than clouds and
only a slight chance of a shower or storm each day. Highs around 88 at the water’s edge and 92 to 95 not far inland.

WAY FAR AWAY: 112 in Death Valley was the hottest Thursday...33 at Redmond, Oregon was the chilliest this morning...Baton Rouge has received only 11 inches of rain so far this year compared to 30.36 in Birmingham. Baton Rouge is almost 18 inches below normal and New Orleans almost 15 inches...in Iraq, high temperatures will be between 112 and 118 for the next 4 to 5 days.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Too much on my plate yesterday and today and there was no ballgame with Little Miss Molly. She seems semi-peeved this afternoon and is sleeping most of the day. She clearly knows she is being cheated with playtime. For sure, I will make it up to her tomorrow with a full 9-inning game...she has turned a bit mischievous again lately. She got in the clothes closet and extracted some innersoles from some shoes. She also got into my wife’s purse and stole her glasses and sunglasses. Fortunately we caught her before any damage...maybe that is her way of silently protesting that she is not getting enough attention. Life goes on.
