...Sunny Monday...
GOOD MORNING: Northwesterly flows in the upper atmosphere over Alabama can
be problematic. You would think they would deliver only cool, stable air.
But they frequently spit evil little disturbances our way. Sometimes, those
disturbances can produce big, hulking thunderstorm complexes. One such
complex passed to our north yesterday and last night. It gave North Alabama
some severe weather, but it weakened before the main activity got down into
Central Alabama.
MONDAY/TUESDAY: High pressure should maintain a tenuously hold on our
weather near the surface today and tomorrow. Temperatures will warm nicely,
rising into the middle and upper 80s.
MIDWEEK AND BEYOND: A fairly potent disturbance and attendant surface low
will ride down the backside of the trough on the northwest flow by
Wednesday, spread clouds, rain and thunderstorms into Alabama. I don't
think that the activity will be widespread or very heavy, but there is a
fairly good chance most people will see precipitation.
Those showers look like they may continue into Thursday, and a slight chance
of showers and storms may continue into Friday and Saturday, but conditions
will be more summerlike by then.
ON THIS DATE IN 1976: The Teton Dam in Idaho had just been completed when a
leak appeared on June 3, 1976. Despite the leak, there seemed to be no
cause for alarm. The reservoir was filled with runoff from a winter of
heavy snows. On the morning of June 5th,the leak worsened. Engineers knew
they were in trouble when a whirlpool formed behind the dam. Water was now
escaping rapidly through the earthen dam. Warnings to evacuate were
frantic. The hole widened until the entire dam crumbled sending 180 billion
gallons of water pouring down the Teton River Canyon. The towns of
Wilford, Sugar City and Rexburg were inundated. Eleven people died, but the
toll could have been much worse if the disaster had occurred at night.
