GOOD AFTERNOON: Today’s forecast comes to you from beautiful Fort Myers, Florida, spring training home of the Boston Red Sox.

CHILLY START: Winds stayed up just a bit overnight, preventing a widespread freeze. Still, many locations did make it below freezing. Readings may be a degree or two colder tonight and a freeze warning is in effect for much of the area. Protect any tender vegetation.

OUR FORECAST: Tomorrow should be a carbon copy of today for the most part, except that daytime highs will run a couple of degrees warmer than today. So expect lots of sunshine. The surface high will slide east of us by Monday, allowing for southerly winds to return and the warm up will begin. Readings will be in the 60s Monday and we should see 70s for most of the remainder of the week. A system will pass to our north on Tuesday, allowing showers to begin late Monday night, lasting into most of Tuesday. There might be a little thunders thrown in just to remind us it is Spring, but nothing major. The weather will remain unsettled Wednesday and Thursday, with showers possible both days.

SEVERE WEATHER LATE IN WEEK: Looks like a significant chance for severe weather across eastern Texas, eastern Oklahoma, northwestern Louisiana and Arkansas on Thursday as a major storm system moves across the Plains states. Looks like that system will be pushing a line of showers and storms our way early on Friday. Hopefully, it will come through at the least favorable time of the day for severe weather.

SPECIAL WEATHER BRAINS GUEST: This week’s edition of our Weather Brains podcast will be one you will be certainly want to hear. More later…

FAMOUS TORNADO FORECAST = SECOND HALF: For the second time in less than a week, Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City was struck by a tornado rated F3 on the Fujita scale. This time 35 aircraft were destroyed and damage totaled 6 million dollars. The first tornado back on the 20th hit without warning but this second tornado was predicted by Major Ernest J. Fawbush and Air Force Captain Robert C. Miller of the United States Air Force and their accurate tornado forecast ushered in the modern era of severe weather forecasting. This first tornado forecast was instrumental in advancing the nation's commitment to protecting the American public and military resources from the dangers caused by natural hazards.

HAIL DAY: Three of the costliest hailstorms ever to hit the United States occurred on this date.
In 1992, the Orlando area was barraged by hailstones that may have been as much as four inches in diameter (larger than baseballs.) The largest officially reported stone was 3 inches in diameter, but observers reported that significant melting had already occurred by the time the measurement was taken. The storm caused sixty million dollars worth of damage. The important nursery industry was decimated in parts of Lake and Orange Counties as thousands of panes of glass were destroyed in greenhouses.

In 1993, the worst hailstorm ever observed in Austin, Texas occurred as hailstones up to two inches (larger than golf balls) pounded the city. Sixty people were injured as they scrambled for cover. Damage totaled $75 million.

In 1995, the first of tree major hailstorms that would affect the Dallas/Fort Worth area during the Spring pounded Dallas County with 3 inch stones.

Damage totaled $80 million. Of course, on May 5th, an even worse hailstorm struck Fort Worth as the annual Mayfest celebration was going on in Trinity Park, attended by 10,000 people. Baseball sized hail injured a total of 109 people. Damage totaled an inconceivable $1.3 billion.
