GOOD AFTERNOON: Disappointed snow fans outnumber the snowflakes about two
to one across Central Alabama early on this Saturday afternoon. Hey folks,
no one more disappointed than me. But Alabama winters have been
disappointing me for nearly all of the forty four years I have been on this
planet. Especially when it comes to the prospects for a non-major weekend
snow. Our last fun snow in my books was 1992. And I can't count it as
totally fun because I broke my leg, foot and ankle playing in it. There
were some dusting in the past ten years, but nothing you could call classic.
Tonight we will talk about favorite snow memories over on the blog, so get
ready.

A RAW DAY: Cold air finally began filtering into Central Alabama by
midmorning. Temperatures held steady at 42F from midnight until 7 a.m.
Then the mercury dropped five degrees and stayed there for the next three
hours. Skies over most of the area have been cloudy. But a dry slot that
was rotating around the upper low to our Northwest has been eroding clouds
over a good bit of West and Northwest Alabama. Sunshine will allow
temperatures to warm back into the lower to middle 40s in some areas.
Cloudy locations will stay in the upper 30s to near 40 degrees. It has
become breezy on the back side of the exiting low pressure system, with
northwest winds averaging 10-20 mph. Those winds will die down a bit
tonight, but probably not go completely calm. A disturbance is expected to
pass over the area tonight, and will turn skies back to cloudy and perhaps
shake out a few snowflakes across the area. No significant accumulations
are expected, although a few folks could see a little whitening. The clouds
and wind will keep temperatures from falling much past 27-29 degrees
tonight.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: I think we will see some clearing by morning, with at
least partial sunshine tomorrow. The temperature forecast for tomorrow will
be problematic. Balancing the additional sunshine against continued flow of
cold air into the area. We will call for highs tomorrow between 40-43
degrees. Skies may turn cloudy again as another disturbance rotates
through. The models hint at a chance of snow flurries again tomorrow night.
Again, nothing to get excited about. Monday morning will probably be the
coldest morning, when temperatures across the area will average 23F. I
thought we might see a few teens, but if we stay cloudy for awhile,
temperatures should stay up enough to prevent that. A warmer pattern will
evolve as we head into the middle of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1983: A major snowstorm struck the Mid Atlantic states and
southern New England. Thirty five inches in parts of the Blue Ridge
Mountains of West Virginia at Glen Cary. The 25 inches that fell at
Allentown, Pennsylvania is an all-time record for them. Philadelphia,
Harrisburg and Hartford, Connecticut also set all-time records. At one
point, Allentown received five inches of snow in one hour! Weather people
call it the " Megalopolitan blockbuster snowstorm." In New York City,
street crews were faced with the 18-22 inches of snow dumped on the Big
Apple by the blizzard. They gave it their own name: Earl.
