A WILD WEEKEND RIDE: On the weather wagon, that is, as we go
through a big rain event, possibly some snow and the coldest temperatures so
far this season, especially in the daytime.
Rain was spreading eastward steadily from Louisiana and Mississippi
this afternoon as a low pressure area continues to get all of its eggs in
one basket. That low will track northeastward passing somewhere across
Central Alabama overnight and into Georgia by Saturday morning. That low is
going to have plenty of ammunition. It will bring us widespread soaking rain
tonight with every front and backyard in the state getting wet. Some of the
rain will be locally heavy with parts of the state getting well over one
inch. Some folks will hear thunder.
Now, the other intruder. It is cold air that will spilling into the
state behind the low pressure area. It may bring some measurable snow to the
extreme northern part of the state, mainly across the Tennessee Valley with
some places getting 1 to 3 inches. Down here, along the I-20 corridor which
includes Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston, we do not think there will be
measurable snow. In fact, little or none tonight as it should be mostly
rain. For Saturday, cold blustery NW winds gusting as high as 30 mph at
times will occur along with occasional snow showers. Those snow showers
could whiten the ground briefly, but we doubt if there will be any travel
problems since temperatures in the middle of the day will edge upward to 36
to 38. Could still be a few snowflakes around Sunday morning, but dry
weather is expected Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will drop to the low
20s Sunday morning through Tuesday morning.
We, of course, will watch all of this closely in case there is a
change in the track of the low pressure area. One of our weather models
(ugh!) hints that there could be a few flurries down to south of Montgomery.
We doubt that.
A TRAGIC MONTGOMERY TORNADO: Thanks to Chris Howard in the Alabama
ADEM Office for reminding me that Sunday is the 61st anniversary of a tragic
tornado that struck Montgomery in 1945. It was listed as an F3 killing 26
persons and injuring more than 100. 600 buildings, including homes, were
destroyed or damaged.
FRIVOLOUS FRIDAY: Hope you will forgive my fascination with strange
sounding place names, but here are some snow depths from very remote high
country locations in Colorado. Never Summer 52 inches, Lizard Head Pass 34
inches (I ran into heavy snow crossing that pass in mid-August one time),
Whiskey Creek 11 inches, Rough and Tumble 22 inches, Deadman Hill 48
inches...coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 20 below at Watertown, New
York...hottest yesterday 90 in Oxnard, California...near blizzard conditions
upcoming for Boston over the weekend with heavy snow Saturday night and
Sunday.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Got several e-mails chastising me for
not mentioning Little Miss Molly in this morning's edition...ran out of
space because of all the pressing weather information. A lot of people have
asked to get their "Molly fix" 7 days a week. That makes me feel real good.
I do the afternoon edition Monday through Friday, but will try to start
posting at least one weekend story about Molly on the 33/40 weather blog.
When you go to that, you will notice a list of categories, click on Ms.
Molly...have had to ignore that little girl all day because of weather work,
but we played with her a lot yesterday. In about three minutes when I finish
this column, I am going to go rushing into the living area with 4 balls in
my hand, toss them in the air and let them land near her. That will drive
her crazy. She owns the living area. Life goes on. -J B. Elliott
