ALABAMA STORY IS ONE OF CHANGES: A variety of weather over the next
several days including some threat of wintry precipitation. The only thing
we cannot offer for the next 5 to 7 days is mild temperatures.

Clear and cold for tonight, but clouds will increase Friday
with some rain reaching the area during the afternoon. That rain will become
widespread Friday night, spreading over the entire state. In fact, it looks
like a general drenching. Over at least the south half of the state, you
will also hear thunder. The only fly in the ointment is that colder air will
be spilling down into the state Friday night and Saturday morning. Timing is
going to be crucial as to how fast it gets cold and how fast most of the
rain moves out. We believe that the rain will change over to light snow or
flurries after midnight Friday night. We don't think there will be
accumulations along the I-20 corridor, such as Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and
Anniston, but there could be some light accumulation further north.

Why all this foul weather? A major low pressure area will form and
track NE. It will move directly across Alabama Friday night. One of our
weather models brings it right across the center of the state, which would
lessen the threat of snow. The other one carries it further south. Our
forecast is sort of a compromise between the two.

You won't enjoy being outside Saturday as NW winds gust as high as
30 mph at times and highs only reach the mid and upper 30s. There will also
be some lingering flurries. See our forecast for all of the details.

COVERING A LOT OF BASES: 9 inches was the amount of snow in the
higher elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains this morning...2 inches in
Gatlinburg...that region will get more snow starting Friday night and
continuing Saturday...26 below was the coldest in Alaska this morning at
Point Lay...13 below in International Falls, Minnesota for the lower 48...90
was the summer-like temperature at several Southern California locations
yesterday...today is the anniversary of the formation of the U. S. Weather
Bureau. It happened on this date way back in 1870...a few snowflakes were
noted this morning in several North Alabama locations, but not enough to get
excited about...snow forecasting is not easy anywhere. On this date in 1969,
20 inches of snow fell in New York City with drifts up to 20 feet. It became
known as the Lindsay Snowstorm because of the political fallout when
portions of the city were still not plowed a week after the storm. Original
forecasts did not call for accumulation. 800 cars were stranded on just one
of New York's bridges.

STORM ALERT IS TONIGHT: The second stop on the tour is at Homewood
High School at 7:00 p.m. It is essential that you get there early to get a
good seat. The entire 33/40 weather team will be there with lots of great
weather stories.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I wonder if Little Miss
Molly wishes she could have come to a different home where she could get
some regular sleep. Our sleeping hours keep the little girl mixed up, but
she clearly loves us and that is what counts. Last night when we went to get
her off the couch to put her to bed, she was sound asleep with all four feet
sticking straight up. She moaned and groaned like crazy when we moved her.
Out on the walking track this morning, for the first time ever, Molly paid
close attention to a fluffy cumulus cloud. At the time, I was running down
the track with her. She was looking up and running and almost collided with
a tree. Life goes on regardless of how much sleep we get.
