...Blustery Weekend...

Here we go on a wild weekend keeping watch on a widespread soaking rain and
the possibility of some wintry precipitation and a very cold and blustery
Saturday.

But first things first. Today will be fairly good, but clouds will be on the
increase. Rain will reach the area at some point late this afternoon and
spread out to become a statewide soaker tonight. Virtually every square inch
of the state will get wet and some areas will receive locally heavy rain.
From about Birmingham southward, you might even hear some thunder tonight.

The big question mark is the exact path of a significant low pressure area
that will track across Alabama tonight and early Saturday morning. That will
determine who will get all rain and who might have some snow mixed in. After
soaking up all the weather models we could and looking at it from every
angle, we think this will happen tonight: extensive rain will occur while
cold air starts spilling into the state from the NW in the wake of the low
pressure area. The rain should change to light snow flurries after midnight
and by daybreak we may have a change over to light snow or flurries as far
south as the Birmingham.

Saturday will be blustery and very cold with occasional light snow or snow
showers. There could be some light accumulations this far south and at least
a dusting.

The cold air will continue to be around on Sunday and there could even be a
few light snow flurries, mainly Sunday morning.
We must emphasize that we will watch the situation very closely later today
for any possible changes. Weather models have not been really consistent on
this storm system.

THE BIG APPLE: This same low pressure area is going to bring a lot of snow
to the NE, including New York and Boston. The heavy snow in NYC will be
Saturday night and Sunday.a few other notes...Thursday was the 113th day in
a row with no rain in Phoenix, even though there were a few sprinkles in the
area...a summer-like 90 degrees in Oxnard, California yesterday.
