...Winter storm Threat?...

Here we go with another winter storm threat for the Deep South. Before we go
there, we should mention that today will be dry and cool, with ample
sunshine and highs in the mid 40s. Clouds will begin to return tomorrow.

WINTER STORM? Models now agree a significant surface low will form near
Mobile tomorrow evening. This feature should spread precipitation over all
of Alabama tomorrow night. Initially, for Central Alabama, the precipitation
should fall in the form of rain. Then, late tomorrow night, as the surface
low moves over far South Alabama and colder air is pulled southward, we
expect the rain to change to snow. For now, we are projecting one to two
inches of snow over much of Central Alabama, but there should be a strip of
heavier snow involved. For the moment it looks like that strip could be
close to U.S. 278, or a line from Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden. Some
travel problems are possible by early Saturday morning.

The snow will taper off to flurries Saturday, but very cold air moves into
the state. Temperatures will have a hard time reaching 40 degrees with
clouds lingering much of the day.

If the sky clears Saturday night, we have a good chance of reaching the
upper teens early Sunday. And, Monday morning could be just as cold. This
will be the coldest air we have seen so far this season.

Remember, all of this could change. Winter weather forecasting in Alabama is
very difficult!
