GOOD AFTERNOON: Well, if you read my forecast yesterday, you know that I
tried to replace the excitement of the New Years day college football games
with my grading the matchup between Severe Weather and Non Event. We were
all pulling for Non Event, and so far it has been a rout, with only two
tornadoes and about three dozen severe reports as of noon.

HOORAY CAPS! I collect caps. They are good things. Sometimes, a cap in
the atmosphere is a bad thing, especially over the Plains, where a capping
inversion can allow the atmosphere to reach the boiling point before it
produces convection, and the results are disastrous. Our cap from last
night and this morning was a very good thing. As I said yesterday, "Go
Non-Event." But we have to be prepared, especially in these overnight
events where people are not paying attention like they should Consider the
twenty two people who died in Evansville, Indiana from a middle or the night
tornado on November 6th.

Alabama experienced a record 74 tornadoes in 2005. That number was
tremendously inflated by the number of tropical systems that directly
affected the state. But there were no tornado fatalities in the state in
2005. The goal is to provide effective warnings and forecasts that don't
miss the mark, while not creating too many false alarms. The ultimate goal
is no fatalities.

IT'S NOT OVER UNTIL ITS OVER: But now it's over. Bright sunshine has
warmed temperatures well into the 70s across North and Central Alabama.
Dewpoints are dropping now across middle Alabama as an elevated dry line has
pushed nearly halfway across the state. This dry air is working like a big
roll of Bounty paper towels to soak up the available moisture. Some
impressive dynamics close to the upper low over Missouri are sparking a line
of strong storms over Tennessee, but they don't show signs of sneaking down
into Mississippi or eventually Alabama yet.

Our cold front is moving across western Mississippi this afternoon. It will
sweep through overnight, putting an end officially to this event.
A Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for Central Alabama through the remainder
of the afternoon for breezy west winds that are averaging 10-20 mph.

MOVING FORWARD: Some clouds may wrap back around the upper low tonight,
giving some of us cloud through the overnight and early morning hours. Lows
will drop well into the 40s. But skies should clear on Tuesday, although
temperatures will be significantly cooler. Look for highs on Tuesday to be
in the upper 50s. A dry front slips through Wednesday night, opening the
door for some much colder weather into the weekend. Temperatures on Friday
will struggle to get out of the 30s. There could even be a few light showers
or flurries Friday. Readings will be in the middle 20s Saturday morning.

RECORDS FALLING: A new record high was established for January 2nd in
Birmingham at the airport when the temperature reached 76F. The old record
was 74F set just last year. Muscle Shoals has broken their record high for
the date, which was 73F, with a reading of 75F so far. Huntsville also has
broken their record high for the date, of 72F, with 74F so far.

EARTHQUAKE: In the middle of last night's waiting and watching, a 7.3
earthquake occurred in the South Atlantic off South America. You
immediately think tsunami now, but fortunately one was not triggered.

ZETA: We have seen it all, heard it all in this crazy 2005 North Atlantic
Hurricane Season. From Arlene to Zeta, along with 25 named storms in
between, it seems an eternity since the first tropical storm of the season
formed on June 8th. And not to sound like Mr. Bringdown, but the start of
hurricane season is just five months away.
