GOOD AFTERNOON: Today's highs are near normal for early January in
Alabama. Looks for a fairly impressive warm up to occur tomorrow. In fact,
temperatures tonight will bottom out early around 40 degrees, and then will
probably rise slightly during the night as a southwesterly flow increases
across the state. At the surface, high pressure to the east of Alabama and
a low pressure system sliding by to our north will set up the southwesterly
wind flow. Then get set for temperatures soaring to near 70 degrees
tomorrow in some areas. A great January day to get outside.

CHANGES AHEAD: As the low pressure system moves into the Great Lakes
region, it will send a trailing cold front our way. Clouds will begin to
thicken on Sunday night, with cloudy skies expected by Monday morning. A
few showers will break out by Monday morning as the front settles into
Alabama.

Meanwhile, a wave will develop to the west of Alabama. By Tuesday, the low
will be over Arkansas and shower activity will be increasing over the
Tennessee Valley. We could see a few showers over Central Alabama as well.
Showers and storms will move across the area on Wednesday. Behind this
system, the airmass will not be radically different, and mild conditions
will continue in its wake.

END OF THE WEEK: Thursday will be a day in0between systems, but a second
low moving across the Great Lakes will push another cold front our way.
This means another chance of showers on Friday. Those showers will exit
rather quickly as high pressure begins to build in for the weekend. That
high will move east, allowing for a return flow of moisture. The battle
between this high and a burgeoning Arctic high will set up a long slow
moving frontal system that will give us unsettled weather. Much colder air
will be lurking to our north for much of that week. This could spell some
wintry weather for us at some point that week.

2005 HURRICANE SEASON ENDS...FINALLY: December and January are usually
times for relaxation, research and reflection for forecasters at the
National Hurricane Center. Not this year. The NHC staff finally put a
footnote on the 2005 Hurricane Season when Zeta finally dissipated yesterday
afternoon.

The monster 2005 season is one for the books. The Accumulated Cyclone
Energy (ACE) observed during the year established a new record. ACE is a
measurement designed by NOAA to gauge the level of activity in a hurricane
season.

RECORD BIN: Friday was a warm one across the Rocky Mountain states,
central and southern Plains and the Southwest. Some notable record highs
included: 74F in Pueblo, Colorado; 65F in Colorado Springs. It was 66F at
Denver. At least 22 records were broken in the area of responsibility of
San Diego yesterday, including 83F at San Diego's Lindbergh Airport, 83 at
Laguna Beach and 89 at Fullerton.

ON THIS DATE IN 1973: A major ice storm crippled Atlanta with four inches
of freezing rain from the 7th to the 8th. Between 7pm and 9pm, 2.27 inches
of liquid equivalent precipitation fell in the form of freezing rain, sleet
and snow coated Atlanta while the temperature hovered at 32 degrees.
Schools and businesses were closed for several days and damages total $25
million. Up to 300,000 had no electricity for a week.
