===================================================================
The calendar says January, but yesterday's weather was more like spring.
Record highs were common across the deep south; Birmingham soared to 77,
easily beating the old record of 74 set just one year ago. Other new records
yesterday included 80 at Mobile, 76 at Muscle Shoals, and 74 at Huntsville.
These values are over 20 degrees above normal for early January. The warmest
spot was Montgomery with 81.
A COOLER DAY: We are forecasting highs today only in the upper 50s as cooler
air returns to Alabama. The mercury will reach the upper 30s tomorrow
morning in most spots.
Clouds will increase on Thursday as a cold front moves into the state, but
at this point we don't expect any rain. A secondary surge of cold air
arrives on Friday, when we will have a hard time reaching the 40 degree mark
with a chilly north wind. There could be enough moisture for a few sprinkles
or flurries, but at this point it looks like most communities will be dry.
WEEKEND PEEK: After a cold start early Saturday with temperatures in the mid
20s, we expect a slow warming trend over the weekend. Highs should be in the
50s on Saturday, with 60s on Sunday. The weekend should be dry.
YESTERDAY'S RAIN: Early morning thunderstorms brought the first rain of the
year to some Alabama communities. Totals included 0.70" at Black Creek (near
Gadsden), 0.45" at Inverness, and 0.43" at Greystone Cove. Much of west
Alabama received no rain at all.
WILD WEST: Winds gusted to 96 MPH yesterday at a site north of Pasadena, CA.
Los Angeles was soaked with 1.83" of rain. The Rose Bowl parade was rained
on for the first time since 1955.
