...Merry Christmas...

GOOD MORNING! Merry Christmas to you and your family this Sunday morning. It is going to be a cloudy, chilly Christmas Day with a breezy west wind and a little light rain lingering, especially during the morning. Clearing should occur by Monday morning, leading to dry weather through Tuesday before a new storm system brings midweek rains again.

TODAY: Colder air is flowing into Alabama today on westerly winds circulating around low pressure to our north. In fact, temperatures will hold steady in the 40s or slowly retreat in most locations today. The combination of the breezy west winds, chilly temperatures, thick clouds and occasional light rain will make for a miserable weather day today. It will be a great day to celebrate the birth of Christ or the beginning of Hanukkah. The two holidays fall on the same date for the first time since 1959. Skies will begin to clear overnight tonight, with temperatures falling to near freezing in most locations.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks to be a mostly sunny day, but readings will remain in the upper 40s. Clear and calm conditions will prevail Monday night. Tuesday will also dawn clear with morning readings right around freezing again. With southerly winds kicking back in on Tuesday, skies will become partly cloudy, and the mercury will “soar: into the lower 60s. By that time, low pressure over the Rockies will be moving out onto the Plains. As moisture levels increase across our area, showers may break out during the predawn hours on Wednesday. Wednesday will be mostly cloudy with showers. As the low moves toward Alabama, showers and storms will increase Wednesday night. It may be a slow mover, keeping shower chances in our forecast into Thursday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The British Mars probe Beagle 2 may have been lost because of a missed weather forecast. Scientists believe that the craft’s parachutes failed to deploy as it attempt to land on the Red Planet on Christmas Day 2003 because the atmosphere was thinner than expected at the time.
