THOSE WHO HAVE IT AND THOSE WHO DON'T: Rain, that is. Yesterday Del
Rio, near the big Mistad Reservoir along the Rio Grande in South Texas, got
7.59 inches of rain-their fourth wettest day ever. Flooding rains continue
in the northeast. Here in Alabama, we are the "have nots." Tuscaloosa has
only received one-tenth of an inch of rain this month and Birmingham
one-half inch. Anniston has fared a little better because they got 1.44 on
October 7.
Looks like virtually no chance of rain for us until over a week from
now. With the dry weather, comes almost total sunshine comfortable
afternoons and cool nights. Actually, an invisible cool front was crossing
the state today and a another fresh supply of cooler dry air will arrive
Saturday with little or no fanfare. We believe our coolest temperatures will
be Sunday morning and Monday morning. In fact, by Monday morning there could
be some mid 40s in the cooler North Alabama valleys. Highs will vary from 79
to 82 over the next five days.
THE RAIN TRAIN: Seems like a long train of rain events for the
northeast, but for the Big Apple it appears the worst is over. Rain should
taper off by tomorrow and pretty much end by Sunday. Amazing rainfall totals
from that part of the country. In the heart of New York City, Central Park
has received 12.41 inches so far in October, most of that during the last
week. Today is the eighth day in a row that most of that area is getting
rain. During that week, Poughkeepsie, New York has received 11.55 inches of
rain and over 13 inches at Andover, New Jersey.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Perfect weather for high school games tonight.
Clear with 70s at kickoff and 60s later in the game. Saturday Alabama will
be in Oxford to play Ole Miss at 11 am. Sunny with the temperature peaking
around 82 later in the game. Auburn plays Arkansas in Fayetteville at 6 pm.
Clear with 75 at kickoff, about 60 at the final whistle. UAB will be in
Huntington, West Virginia to play the Marshall University Thundering Herd in
their homecoming game at 4 pm, CDT. Dry weather with 68 at kickoff and 50s
by the end.
STORM ALERT XTREME: Don't forget...it starts at 9:15 tomorrow
morning at Briarwood Presbyterian Church just off I-459 and Acton Road.
Lot's of great information.
TROPICAL WEATHER: Getting a little more interesting. A broad low
pressure area around Jamaica seems to be more active and upper level winds
should become more friendly for tropical cyclone formation. It will move
slowly west and may get into the NW Caribbean. If it becomes a tropical
storm, it will be "Wilma"-the last name available for this year. If still
others form, the NHC will have to revert to the Greek alphabet. (Alpha,
Beta, etc.) Never happened before.
ELSEWHERE: USA cold spots this morning Eagle, Alaska 6 above; Big
Piney, Wyoming 24; coolest in Alabama, Payne and DeSoto State Park with 52.
MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am totally convinced that Little
Miss Molly knows Jo-Jo's bark from every other dog in the world. Jo-Jo is
the pretty little white dog that lives behind us about one-quarter mile away
and through the thick hedgerow. Out walking with Miss Molly this morning she
heard just one single yap from Jo-Jo. She was in the midst of doing her
business. She stopped that and ran straight into the hedgerow trying to find
Jo-Jo. She is truly in love with that little fella...played ball with Little
Miss Molly late last night until her tongue hanging out as much as I have
ever seen it. So was mine. Life goes on even with the tribulation of little
dog's love affairs.
