SATURDAY'S SPECIAL PROGRAM: It will be at Briarwood Presbyterian
Church just off Acton Road, which is just off I-459. Exit and go west just
a couple of blocks and turn up the hill on the same side of Acton Road that
the Alabama headquarters of AAA is located. It is called Storm Alert XTREME.
It is a great way to learn all about storm spotting and severe weather
forecasting. It starts at 9:15 and totally free. Don't need to register.
Persons on the program include Jim Stefkovich, who heads the Birmingham NWS;
Jeff Craven, NWS, Jackson; Brian Peters, John Oldshue, Jason Simpson and
James Spann from 33/40.

Ever since my mom bought me a 29 cent thermometer and a 5 cent
composition book at F. W. Woolworth in Tuscaloosa, and I started keeping
weather records in Havana Jct., I have tried to learn something new about
the weather every day. Even though I have been involved in weather work for
what seems like 150 years, I hope to be there Saturday taking notes and
learning something new. If not, I will grow stale and the world of weather
will pass me by.

ALABAMA TODAY: We are in a rut and it looks like we will stay dry
for at least the next 5 days. Originally it appeared that we could have a
few showers late Friday or Friday night. However, we have taken those out of
the forecast. Not enough evidence. We may still have some low clouds and fog
tomorrow morning, but there will be more sun that clouds during the day and
afternoons will be a bit warmer. It will be great to get rid of those low
clouds, because it is difficult to know when they will break up. Yesterday,
for example, the high was only 72 in Cullman while Montgomery had 85.

A BONA FIDE FLASH FLOOD: With all the other worldwide disasters,
the flash flooding in the NE USA probably did not command as much attention
as it normally would. It is a very serious situation and they are getting
drenched again today. Earlier in the week, Plainfield, Massachusetts
received 11 inches of rain in only 24 hours. Latest data indicates as much
as 7 inches of additional rain could fall in the next several days from
Connecticut and Maine. Off the New England coast today, a weather buoy was
reporting NE winds up to 50 mph with 15-foot waves. Might as well be a
tropical storm.

TROPICAL WEATHER: All of that restless weather from Central America
across the Caribbean and several hundred miles into the Atlantic still shows
no sign of tropical development. If it does try to later, it will be slow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I wrote a day or so ago about Little
Miss Molly's great escape and I had to chase her down. A nice e-mail from
Jane Alexander in Hueytown labeled that as EADS. (Escape Associated Deafness
Syndrome.) She wondered if that was common with a Shih-Tsu breed of dogs.
Her little Ozzie used to slip out the door often and go completely deaf! He
managed to make it to a pasture a few times where there was a
"high-spirited" horse. That could have been bad news because Ozzie thinks of
himself as big as the horse and would probably try to boss it around. He is
not as bad as he used to be because he will be 7 this month. For a time, the
only way they could get him back in the house was to play ball with him till
he was exhausted. I wonder if Molly and Ozzie have been exchanging emails!
Life goes on and it sure is a more pleasant journey with Little Miss Molly
riding along.
