1055 AM CDT SAT SEP 24 2005
...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOBILE HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD
WATCH THROUGH SUNDAY FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES...
IN SOUTHWEST ALABAMA...BALDWIN...CHOCTAW...CLARKE...MOBILE
AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES.
IN SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI...STONE...GEORGE...GREENE...PERRY
AND WAYNE COUNTIES.
IN NORTHWEST FLORIDA...ESCAMBIA...OKALOOSA AND SANTA ROSA COUNTIES.
HURRICANE RITA MADE LANDFALL DURING THE EARLY MORNING HOURS SATURDAY
OVER EXTREME WESTERN LOUISIANA. THE STORM IS MOVING NORTHWARD ACROSS
EXTREME EASTERN TEXAS THIS MORNING...AND WILL CONTINUE SLOWLY NORTH
ALONG THE TEXAS AND LOUISIANA STATE LINE THROUGH TONIGHT. SPIRAL
BANDS OF HEAVY RAIN WILL PERIODICALLY MOVE ACROSS THE AREA TODAY...
AND BECOME EVEN MORE LIKELY TONIGHT AND SUNDAY AS RITA SLOWS AND
BEGINS TO MOVE A LITTLE MORE TOWARD THE EAST OVER INTERIOR PORTIONS
OF LOUISIANA AND SOUTHERN ARKANSAS.
WHILE SCATTERED COVERAGE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL OCCUR
ACROSS THE WARNED AREA TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY...THERE WILL LIKELY BE A
SPIRAL FEEDER BAND OF HEAVY RAINFALL SET UP SOMEWHERE ACROSS THE
WARNED AREA TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY. RAIN ACCUMULATIONS WILL GENERALLY BE
1 TO 2 INCHES ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE WARNED AREA TODAY AS SCATTERED
SHOWERS AND STORMS MOVE ACROSS THE REGION...WITH ACCUMULATIONS OF
2 TO 4 INCHES POSSIBLE TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY. DEPENDING ON JUST
WHERE THE FEEDER BAND SETS UP TONIGHT AND SUNDAY...LOCALLY HIGHER
RAINFALL AMOUNTS COULD BE POSSIBLE.
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT RAPID FLOODING OF STREAMS...CREEKS AND
OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITHIN THE WATCH AREA. PEOPLE
IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD CHECK PREPAREDNESS REQUIREMENTS...KEEP
INFORMED...AND BE READY FOR QUICK ACTION IF FLASH FLOODING IS
OBSERVED OR IF A WARNING IS ISSUED. DO NOT STAY IN AREAS SUBJECT TO
FLOODING WHEN WATER BEGINS RISING.
MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE
WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW
YOUR CAR TO CROSS SAFELY. REMEMBER...IT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO
RECOGNIZE THE DANGERS OF FLOODS AND FLASH FLOODS AT NIGHT...AND
MOTORISTS SHOULD BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS TONIGHT.
