FLOOD WATCH
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MOBILE AL
1100 PM CDT FRI SEP 23 2005

...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MOBILE HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD
WATCH FOR TONIGHT AND SATURDAY FOR THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES...

IN SOUTHWEST ALABAMA...BALDWIN AND MOBILE COUNTIES.

IN SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI...GEORGE AND STONE COUNTIES.

IN NORTHWEST FLORIDA...OKALOOSA...ESCAMBIA AND SANTA ROSA COUNTIES.

HURRICANE RITA IS EXPECTED TO MAKE LANDFALL NEAR THE TEXAS AND
LOUISIANA STATE LINE SOMETIME EARLY SATURDAY MORNING...THEN LINGER
OVER EAST TEXAS AND NORTHERN LOUISIANA OVER THE WEEKEND. WELL EAST OF
THIS TRACK...SPIRAL BANDS OF HEAVY RAIN ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE
DEVELOPING OVER THE ALABAMA AND NORTHWEST FLORIDA COASTAL WATERS AND
TRAIN NORTHWARD TONIGHT AND SATURDAY.

AT THIS TIME...THE THREAT OF FLASH FLOODING WILL BE MAINLY CONFINED
TO WHEREVER THE BANDS SET UP AND TRAIN. THEREFORE...ALTHOUGH
WIDESPREAD RAIN ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES IS MORE LIKELY...MUCH
HIGHER LOCALLY HEAVIER AMOUNTS OF 3 TO 5 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE UNDER
THE TRAINING BANDS. EXACT TIMING AND LOCATION OF THE SWATH OF THE
HEAVIER RAIN BANDS IS UNCERTAIN. HOWEVER...THE GREATEST THREAT
APPEARS TO BE ACROSS THE LOWER PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI...
SOUTHWEST ALABAMA...AND THE EXTREME WESTERN FLORIDA PANHANDLE AS
BANDS OF RAIN TRAIN FROM THE ALABAMA AND NORTHWEST FLORIDA COASTS
INTO SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA AND SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT RAPID FLOODING OF STREAMS...CREEKS AND
OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITHIN THE WATCH AREA. PEOPLE
IN THE WATCH AREA SHOULD CHECK PREPAREDNESS REQUIREMENTS...KEEP
INFORMED...AND BE READY FOR QUICK ACTION IF FLASH FLOODING IS
OBSERVED OR IF A WARNING IS ISSUED. DO NOT STAY IN AREAS SUBJECT TO
FLOODING WHEN WATER BEGINS RISING.

REMEMBER...BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS AT NIGHT WHEN IT IS HARDER TO
RECOGNIZE THE DANGERS OF FLOODS AND FLASH FLOODS. DO NOT DRIVE YOUR
VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. THE WATER
DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS SAFELY.
