RITA WEARING OUT HER WELCOME: Have you ever seen as much attention
given to a tropical storm or hurricane? The combined air time between
Katrina and Rita is enormous. I was listening to WWL Radio in New Orleans
during the night and they were still giving continuous wall-to-wall
coverage.

Our attention must be on Rita whether we like it or not. She was
stirring up trouble in the NW Gulf of Mexico this afternoon and still on
track to move ashore around daybreak Saturday somewhere between Galveston
and the Louisiana-Texas border. We can still have some surprises, but that
seems to be the most favored area.

At times this afternoon, Rita seemed to be injured and fragmented a
bit. This often happens when a powerful hurricane persists for several days.
It is very difficult for a Category 5 hurricane to stay that way. After
making landfall, Rita should move northward through extreme east part of
Texas and slow down greatly. In fact, even in the middle of next week she
will probably be virtually stationary somewhere around Texarkana or
Shreveport. Some of the weather models hint that she might loop and move
back southward toward the coast. She will be a tropical depression at that
time, so the compelling issue is rainfall.

While Rita may produce extensive and major damage late tonight and
Saturday, a big issue is major flooding from the enormous amount of rain she
will produce. 8 to 12 inches is likely near her path, but if she stalls
inland, she may sit there and dump rain for several days and 25-inch amounts
are not out of the question.

This afternoon numerous showers and thunderstorms were occurring
along the middle Gulf Coast producing some heavy rain in places, including
New Orleans. A Tornado Watch was in effect much of the day from Mobile all
the way over to SW Louisiana.

HOW DOES ALABAMA FARE IN ALL OF THIS: Lots of warm humid air was
being pulled northward from the Gulf. By Saturday we look for an increase in
showers and thunderstorms, but not an all-day rain. Still a good chance on
Sunday, but they should start thinning out early next week. High
temperatures will back off to the mid 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama meets Arkansas a 11:30 Saturday in
Tuscaloosa and Western Kentucky will be at Auburn for a 1:30 game. Both
games are subject to some scattered showers and thunderstorms in the area
and game time temperatures will be in the 83 to 86 range.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was happy to see that low of 19 in
Embarrass, Minnesota this morning. It tells me that one of these days Little
Miss Molly and I will not have to come back from our half-mile walk with our
tongues hanging out. We were out at sunrise this morning and everything
looked so fresh and clean. The minute we stepped outside, we heard two old
crows talking to each other. It was like music to our ears. When we started
back home, Molly looked back and saw Tommie who is one of her favorite
people in the community. Even though she was 100 yards behind us, Molly
stood on her hind legs and wagged her tail and would not move until they had
a love session. Molly eats that up. Life goes on.
