DO NOT MESS WITH RITA: Remember not too long ago when our normal
high was 91 and our normal low 71? Today the normals are 83 and 61, but we
have been denied the enjoyment in what we should be having in mid and late
September. Instead, our afternoons are as hot as mid summer. Yesterday
virtually every corner of the state had highs in the 90s. Even at DeSoto
State Park the high was 95.

We do expect a gradual drop off in high temperatures over the next
several days, but we still do not see any significant chance of rain. The
broad circulation around Rita may bring in just enough moist air to give us
a few showers in Central Alabama over the weekend and into early next week.
Do not look for much rain.

Now, we must discuss Rita who is an extremely mean hurricane and
very powerful. Rita will continue moving in a general westward motion across
the Gulf of Mexico. She will at times be a Category 4 and maybe even a
Category 5. The landfall for this monster is still projected for the Texas
coast around daybreak Saturday. The most favored area is right in the center
of the coast about halfway between the mouth of the Rio Grande and the
Louisiana coast. This will be to the south of Galveston Bay, but the
Galveston/Houston area should still have a lot of rough weather because of
Rita. Unless there are changes we do not know about, Rita will become a
historic hurricane with devastating damage at landfall. Rainfall could
amount to as much as 12 inches in and around the landfall.

THE ALABAMA-MISSISSIPPI COAST: Unless Rita changes her mind, her
influence along the coast will not be that great. However, a Coastal Flood
Watch is posted and a High Surf Advisory. There will be scattered showers
and thunderstorms all along the coast starting tomorrow and continuing
through most of the weekend. At this time, we do not think there will be any
wind damage. On the Louisiana coast, the winds may be a little stronger,
especially south of Lake Charles. The NWS in New Orleans is calling for
thunderstorms to become numerous by this weekend.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Another exciting start to my early
morning walk with Little Miss Molly. Early in the walk a little butterfly
happened to flitter across just above Molly's head. I did not see it, but
before I knew it, I had been jerked partway down a small embankment since
Molly had a mandate to chase it. She went on one side of a small newly
planted tree and me on the other. She knows to come back up on the correct
side to unwind her leash, but this time she went all the way around the tree
again. So, I had to do a lot of unwinding. We noticed 12 leaves on a young
5-year-old post oak tree have turned yellow. They will probably fall off
early. Molly made a rustling noise as she raced through a mantle of large
leaves from the only sassafras tree in the community. Those leaves often are
a subdued rust color in autumn, but they are going straight from greet to
brown and falling. Woe is me. I loe autumn color, but life goes on.
